My dad has a Hi-lux with the LSD rear diff. The diff is starting to whine now and is on it way out. He has not had it off yet but thinks it could be a bearing i have assured him that it will be more than just a bearing. He has rung around for a replacement diff and been quoted around £400 exchange IIRC. I told him for that sort of money he should get a locker put in but he then runs the problems of the other parts of the diff being worn or damaged. I have seen that Devon has a special on Detroit LSD's dont know if they will fit the Hi-lux?
What do you all think the best course of action to sort this diff out would be? Oh and we are in the UK.

are you sure it's the diff center? There are a few parts it could be.

My center bearing was making some pretty bad noises at one stage.

I also had problems with the rear diff flange leaking diff oil everywhere which made a nice whine also.

You sure its not just the pinion bearing in the diff?
They make a fair bit of noise when they are stuffed.

that price is about reght for a fully rebuilt unit, that is what it should cost to put new gears and bearings into your existing differential, drive in, drive out. If it is the pinion bearing that is collapsed then the noise will be worse on deceleration. if it has been bad for a while, there is every chance that the misalignment of the gears has caused damage to the gears requiring them to be changed.

a locker (other than cheesy lock-rights) is pretty expensive, a detroit or ARB air locker will more than double you 400 invoice.

It is a 1999 Mk 4. Two numbers on the diff casing are 35140 & 92.

Is there an open diff that will fit? As he is a bit of a tight a**e!
