Change my 300Tdi Disco for a Defender ?

Hi all,
I'm new to the list. I have a 300Tdi Disco and am thinking of going to a Dfender Xtreme. The disco is very comfy to ride in but does not have the space for all the camping gear for 5 person family. Test drive of the Xtreme was good.
Am I making a mistake here ? :? :?:

My old boss has a 2000 model, apart from some early recall's in the model it seems alright.

If you don't need to get any where in a hurry, and get lockers instead of the useless traction control there great. :D

I think it sounds like a good idea, though it is largely a matter of personal preference. IMHO...

Disadvantages of a defender oiver a disco...

Not quite as comfortable
Air conditioning in a stupid place (esp if you have long legs) and not very effective
Rear seat could be lower, further back and more confortable
Aerodynamics (and thus fuel economy not as good) - also disco is higher geared.

Advantages
Lots more room
Bigger wheels in a very common size (better off-road etc)
Stronger rear diff and stronger overall construction

Defenders look the goods that's for sure :D You could buy lots of rigs with that look about em but none as comfy as a defender.
I've not had any personal experience with em but I reckon they rule. If I weren't a poorby uni student I'd be steerin one.
Simply put, do it :D

People tell me they are the bees knees and the ducks guts and all that, but has anyone out there done any mods on the comfort stakes. Seating, aircon/heating and noise reduction et al. I'd like to lower and shift back the rear seat. Maybee fit a Disco bench in the back ?
Any comments ?

I solved some of the problems by buying an 87 county instead (the 3.9l 4cyl isuzu diesel models sell for more than early defenders).

Thay have a better (in dash rather than below dash) air con system, cloth (rather than vinyl) seats (although I know people who have put jap car seats in the front for more comfort), carpet, and the rear load leveller (which the Disco and defender didn't have) - which means you can run softer rear coils, hence more comfortable.

Fitting extra sound deadening to a 110 is easy if you want to cut down noise. Have never seen anyone replace the rear seat though. Have seen someone fit head rests to the cargo barrier behind the rear seat though.
