Safari Turbo Oil Feed/Return on 1989 TD42

G'Day Guys,

I'm just about to install a turbo onto my TD42 with the vacuum pump mounted to the alternator. It's a Safari Kit with intercooler, not that it should make a lot of difference.

Anyway......

Currently oil is fed to the vacuum pump from a fitting in the side of the engine block, which is where the turbo is normally fed from in the later models and presumably early ones too. In my case i presume fitting a 't' piece, that will enable the vacuum pump and turbo to be supplied from the one source should suffice.....

Currently oil is returned from the vacuum pump to a fitting on the side of the engine block just beside the feed point. I presume it just drains back to the sump from here. Safari say to weld a socket onto the sump for drain back of oil. Has anyone run the drain back into the vacuum pump return?

If anyone has any advice regarding this would be great, as it saves a fair bit of stuffing around.

What do other brand kits do for oil feed return on these earlier motors?

Nathan

Yeah...

I have with my turbo-glide hi-mount kit. THe only reason you can is because the turbo is a hi-mount. If you try to do what you are saying with the safari kit things will bank up and oil will pizz everywhere..

I personally don't belive that the return line to the side of the engine is efficient enough to dispense the oil from the alternator and turbo. I had initial problems with my turbo leaking out oil despite being set up properly as per turbo glides instructions...

I sent the turbo away and the dude tightened up two bolts on the compressor cover and sent it back to me. It doesn't leak but I do notice a film of oil builds up around the compressor housing ring.. if that makes anysense... The turbo is in good nick too so...

My point is just bung a hole in the sump, or pay someone to do it. Much better that way.

Thanks mate!

I will be doing this next weekend. I actually found an older post last night talking about the "Safari Drain", which is the type of thing i will install. Amazing what you can find when looking for threads about draining the block :)

Fingers crossed it all goes to plan.....

BTW: The "Safari Drain" was referring to a fitting tapped directly into the sump.
