i thought by 98 the 2.8 was no longer and was the 3.0ltr?
i have a 4.5 ltr and its thirst and being auto down hill without reduction gearing is a constant on the brakes job
a work mate has the 2.8td and reckons fuel economy is great and down hills a peice of cake with the diesel's compression , servicing the 4.5 is way cheaper and easier than the 2.8 .
im happy with the 4.5 just needs marks reduction gears for down hills apart from that its very good of road .

inside everything is basically the same , except 2.8 has hand throttle were as my 4.5 doesn't

cheers Jai

neither. Personally i'd go the tried tested and easy to mod 4.2 turbo diesel.

Dont mean to stray from your question, i dont really know anything about either of those engines. except that my old man bought a 99? 4.5 (i think, maybe have been a 4.8) and wasnt happy with fuel consumption, 6 months later took it back and swapped for a 2000 3.0 TD.

Any particular reason you are deciding only between those two?

i've got a 1999 4.5 petrol Auto. good power, auto is great except for descent's which is to be expected, it's easy to service a little thirsty fuel wise compared to the diesels but not that bad. as far as i know they are similar in most respect's have heard gearbox is different in 2.8? good luck and have fun with whatever you buy

Cheer's

for a start, the 98s definatly still had the 2.8s as we have one, they also DO not have a hand throttle, there is a few issues to consider,
1 they have an electronic throttle, the accel pedal sends electronic signals to the injector pump which makes themslower thena the old cable system to react,

they have a duel mass fly wheel, which is basically a spring loaded fly wheel, these were $1700 from nissan only plus clutch and plus labour, which made it a costly problem,

other than that, its my old mans truck and we have had a great run so far, its preformed very well with evrything we have thrown at it, drives well althou a little slow off the lline,

also great economy too,

4.5 would be my choice, convert it to run on gas and it'll be cheap to run too.

PS. 3.0 lt was introduced in mid 2000 and 4.8 was introduced in oct.2001

I've got a 99 4.5 petrol, auto. Fuel isn't too bad (300km to 80ltrs gas).

Have the car as intermediate transport until my next chev gets here. Having come out of a chev, the patrol is gutless.

Only thing i would want any different on mine is a manual rather than the auto due to the lack of (read no) engine braking offered by the 4.5.

So it costs about (at current prices $0.40 - $0.44) $38-40 to drive 300km on gas what is it costing you guys with your diesels?

my mates must be earlier model gu 2.8 than as it does have a hand throttle

i payed $3000 a couple a months ago for gas system get around 360km per 80litres (92 usable litres tank) on 33"s with unichip and extractors

there no power house but for a big 4x4 there not a slug (mind you as above its not stock)

I would steer well clear of both 2.8(RD28) and 3.0(ZD30) diesels. The RD28's are gutless and have a habbit of cracking heads, whilst the ZD30's have more issues than ive got time to write, the most common of which is melting pistons. This is ok whilst under warranty but these things cost a mint to rebuild/replace. Plus the ZD30's are a Renault motor(no bulls!@t) the only reason they are in patrols is because renault took over nissan several years ago and started many cost cutting exercises axing many engine and model lines throughout the company.

BTW bingham have u picked up a trading post lately, looked in one the other week and saw about 20 4.2 turbo GU wagons. Not many intercooled ones but 4.2s nonetheless
