Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hey guys,

Just did some mods to my toolbox as you can see from the pics,
it was just one of the shitty ones from bunnings, I thought it could
be reused as it has all the compressor and tank setup in it for my
twin ARB locker setup already and I thought it would fit OK as it is
the same width as the wheel arch.

Problem is, there ain't alot of clearance for the lid to open upward
in the way it does, due to the rollbars.
I could move it over more, but this will waste space.

Question I put to y'all is,
what is the best way to put an opening on the top of this toolbox?
Can I get like a roller shutter or something for it?
What do you guys use for toolbox situations such as these
where a conventional lid cannot be used.
Needs to be strong too so noone steals my stuff.
I do live in Shitney after all.

If it just houses the compressor maybe a side opening door?????

if you want to store tools in there maybe just have the lid slide off.

A roller door needs to roll up into a coil meaning that it would probably take up too much room in the box. Would also be dam expensive.

I could fit the roller at the rear of the toolbox
as I got some room there, just no upward action.

If I was to have the lid completely removable or "slideable"
as you suggested, how would I secure it when closed?
And would I need some sort of runners for it if it did slide?

A two piece hinged lid, hinged at the back and in the centre so that the centre hinge lifts up and back, and the front edge effectively slides back?

Making the bugger weatherproof could be a problem.

FWIW, roll-top desks don't typically coil up - the "roll" section slides under the top of the desk and down inside the back wall. Still don't know that it's practical for your application.

what about something similar to a tilt a door the kind they use for garage doors it would consist of small sections with hinges joining them all together allowing it to tilt

YOu know how you did an angled bit on the corner near the wheel arch?

What about doing the same thing on the top, so that the front/top section slopes back a bit, so the lid starts a few inches further back?

ie

forget the roller anywhere near mud 'n dirt 'n stuff, as they just ain't dirt resistant. Had rollers on the sides of my truck tool boxes & they were an absolute PITA.
Much better off with side opening doors, that drop down. Support'em with a chain or cable, and they're handy for work benches to



just gotta remember to shut'em before ya drive orff............



You could also set it up so that a side opening cover slide up into the top of the box too bit fiddly, but works well and seals better.
