high mount free spool?

Post by 6.5 rangie »

looking at getting a high mount winch and have noticed that in the photo's that the guy sent me there is no free spool lever on the left hand side. Can anyone help me on this, is it an early model and should i steer clear of it, it looks like it needs a bit of a clean up but that doesn't worry me just wondering what the go is with the free spooling! Can it be modified?

So it looks like this? A winch from the 70's or early 80's.

Go for it, mine was spotless inside, and still has plenty of life :D

so how do you free spool it , or do you just power it out, was going to swap it for a 10000 pound low mount, but now i'm not sure.

Having just torn mine apart and put it back together again, I made sure my freespool was working. When you say the level isn't there do you mean the knob has snapped off ?? Or is there a plate over where the lever should be. If it is knob related then just fab something up otherwise take a look at the below link... Step by step rebuild, also show how the free spool works and has a link to the WARN parts list for a hi-mount so if it is missing you can just buy it...

Older ones are cooler. I got mine for $300 off ebay

Where the knob should be on a later model one, this one has nothing, same as the one pictured on this thread. Theres a cast mark of where the knob is as on the later models. I think the early models didn't have a free spool, you just had to winch out.

Correct. And from memory there is a pin through the motor shaft that keeps the pinion in mesh (in free spool models the knob mechanism pushes/pulls the pinion in/out of mesh with the intermediate gear).

Can the free spool knob be added with a little modification?

Take a look at the pics on the site...

While I haven't seen an early one without free spool I would imagine..

All of the necessary gears etc would be inside the case the only exception is that the motor is always indexed with the gears and giving drive to the winch. How I see it anyway. The freespool puts it into neutral with a neat little gear...

You would only have cut the hole out drill the few holes get the gears etc and the free spool mechanism and it shouldn't be a hard job. THe free spool mechanism is very simple.

Does anyone disagee with this ??

I have the same model with no free spool it can be added by changing the top casing, The internal gears are the same. I rebuilt mine with the 4hp motor, Im told you can fit the 6hp. Ididnt bother with the free spool because there not that good on a high mount anyway and at 74 feet per minute try running up a step hill with a cable that fast
