I Don't know the first thing about GPS. I want to get one so I can upskill my self on navigation.
What sort of price should I pay ?
Do the maps cover off-road tracks?
Is a car-mount better than hand-held ?
Please help a newbie...
Cheers,

mate just imported a Magellan cOlor from USA, with 2x256 cards, car kit the lot $1200au..
the Color costs $1400 on its own in australia. No accessories at all..
Import from USA is a good option.

You 'locate' the Aus Basemaps and change them over..
Cost = $0.00

Slightly off topic. I use a gps and OziExplorer to display maps. The pic shows a tracklog from a recent trip on a nasa landsat image converted to 3d by Ozi.
My main use of Ozi has been for planning trips (creating and uploading waypoints and routes to gps) and saving information (tracklogs, waypoints, comments, photos and unmarked tracks) for future information.

The nasa landsat images are free downloads from nasa's zulu server
https://zulu.ssc.nasa.gov/mrsid
Note 1. ignore the warning message 2. these are big files, most are 30 to 50 Meg (1.3 Gig total for 33 that cover Australia).
Edit to fix link.
