GU a/c issues

Mate at work has a 2002 GU 4.2 TD and the computer keeps shutting the air cond. off.
Apparently it does this because it senses engine overheating so it automatically shuts down the a/c. to prevent further load and heat on the engine.
The temp gauge is normal and dealer says nothing is wrong (dont know) so we think it may be a stuffed sensor or temp sender.
Anyone got some clues on this?
