Outer Limits 4x4 Board

I have an opportunity to buy a second hand M5000 (5,000 lb) winch from an aquaintance. 4 questions:

1: Is this just far too small for my FJ40? Even if I use a snatch block? I'm guessing too small but it should be quite cheap.

2: How much is a maximum I should be paying for this? Its had very little use and works fine according to the owner.

3: If I do buy it I would probably like to have it serviced. Can someone give me an indication on price? I know it will depend on what may be found while its apart but a general price if nothing serious needs repair/replacement?

4: Is it hard to rig up a mount for this to go between the chassis rails? Does someone sell one or am I gonna have to put on my booty fab shorts again?

id say prolly to light for a 40, get a 8000lbs high mount , or 9000lb lowmount
2nd hand 9000lbs normally sell for around $900 2nd hand

I'd agree, a 5000lb winch on a 40 is a bit light. It would probably do the job for light recoveries but with a winch you find new confidence.

With new confidence you find yourself deeper in the s*^t. Unfortunately a 5000lb winch won't pull you out of deep s*^t in a 40.

Would be suitable for a Suzuki Sierra.

Yeah, its a bit lightweight for a 40 Not that it matters, 40s dont need a winch

If it is too small for your rig would this acquaintence sell it to an owner of a smaller 4x4 ? Namely me

hold your horses Shorty 40, lets just think about this a little more before I pass on the deal (in which case you are more than welcome to it). Ok, my 40 gets taken out wheeling once a month if I am lucky. I have not been in a situation to need a winch yet but I know one day I might be so its good to be prepared. But IF I ever do need a winch I would say it would probably end up getting used say once or twice a year. At this stage I cant justify buying a new winch right now, or even a second hand 9000lb winch @ $900. I also cant see myself getting into a situation that around 10,000lbs (double line pull) wouldnt get me out of.

I guess the deciding factor for me here apart from price is this. I have to make up or buy a cradle or mount for it to go onto the front of my vehicle. If the other more powerful winches have the same mounting specs then I will almost definately buy this one with the view that if it didn't prove powerful enough for my needs or died in the future I could just buy the bigger one (9000lb) and bolt it straight on.

So to add to my list of questions above, does anyone know if all winches have the same mounting pattern?

i think u might find that the mounting pattern is doff between the diff sizes of winches, u say 10000lb with a doubble pull, but what if u cant to that doublle pull, u would prolly be very near to the max capicty of the which and cook it real fast or just break it outright
5000lbs is about 2.2t a 40 would come close the that , but adding the fact that its gotta drag ur ass out of the mud or up a rock step etc, you will prolly exceed that rating.
