Guys and Gals,
I apologize if this question has already been asked, however I was wondering about transferring an Auto box from a diesel Surf or Prado into an 02 diesel SR5 Hilux. My wife and I have recently moved to an Alpine area, so we need the Hilux to deal with snow as well as lug wood about. We have also just had a ruggie, which means the wife is not working anymore and does not need her little puss box, which isn't suitable for life here anyway. She does not feel confident driving the 5 speed about here and has suggested we sell the Lux for a Prado or something similar. I am very attached to my SR5 and it is also more suitable for what we use it for than a Prado even with a trailer. (The wife also has a soft spot for the Lux, though she will not admit it.) If the truck was converted to an auto, then she would definitely drive it and I could keep it until she goes back to work in 2 years or so and drop the 5 speed back in. I just thought that maybe the boxes may be compatible and could bolt right across and would like to know if I am right or wayyy off the mark.
If the boxes are different, then would someone like say Marks Adapters make an adapter?

Hi Muddy, If the box is from a 2LTE ,the surf's auto box needs input from the computer, so I would think you may need to look for a pre 90-91 model running a 2L motor to have any luck with a straight swap.

Might be a lot easier to put a commy auto with a marks adaptor and new tailshaft ??

I have never done this conversion or realy know anything about it so im only giving suggestions going on my own thoughts.

Being an '02 im guessing its a 1KZ Diesel not a 5L? I think you will find it hard to do the conversion because most of the late Surfs had computerised Auto's so its not going to be a bolt in and go. You could however maybe use the late Auto Bellhousing on an Early 4 runner Auto thats not computer controled.

Unless you can find something that will just bolt straight in and go i would suggest selling it and buying something thats allready Auto.

If you have the 1KZ then its just a simple bolt up BUT all Toy auto's are ECU controlled meaning you will need to wire in a trans ECU and related sensors etc. While its not impossible the problems that you could encounter would make the risk not worthwhile.

I'd suggest you give her hand to hand lessons on shifting the stick or otherwise trade it.

Thanks lads, being someone who is not mechanically minded at all, I just didn't know how hard it would be. Sounds like allot of dramas for what we are getting. Looks like I will just have to part ways with my Hilux...or the wife.

He starts giggling and blowing raspberries, bouncing up and down in your arms. (He is five months old.)

"Or do we wanna go in Mums lil car."
He makes a noise kind of a cross between a cat getting stepped on and a growl and turns his head away.

He is his Dads kid thats for sure.
