ok pulled the diff in my 40 due to some horrible noises.

the oil was a bit crappy, the pinion has about 1/8th a turn play in it, the pinion moves up and down about 1 inch at the flange, and the whole pinion (with diff assembeled) can move in and out of the carrier about 1 inch.

the diff is out of a 1978 fj55, what does it sound like the prob could be? bearing or something more sinister?

the diff was set up professionally about 6 months ago with a detroit locker in it, could it be the workshop's fault for setting it up wrong? the pinion seal chewed out about 2 months ago, as the thing is driven maybe twice a week, i thought that was pretty quick.

pinion bearing as left the building ... would get it checked out buy a pro
as you'll have uneven wear on the gearset

How high is your rear, how tight are your Ubolts. 40s have a habit of binding rear UJs with diff torquing/pigrooting. This stretchs the pinion and snaps it. Fit a tramp/torque rod.
Pinion seals take a hiding from sand, reeds and rushes etc, not counting rust under it from sitting idle.

it doesn't sit idle long enough to rust i don't think.

my rear is about 1 inch over stock height. at full flex the uni's don't come close to binding, and i've never noticed any axle tramp (tired 2f fairly stiff rear springs).
