Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Going up to Wonnangatta this weekend. Have a GU IV 3.0TD with snorkel, bar, muddies etc. In terms of "must-dos" before the trip, are there any other things I should consider, apart from diff breathers. What sort of pipe should I use? Protective cover? Where's the best place to buy this - Bunnings, Autobarn?? Any info would be appreciated. Mike

For breather extentions I used rubber fuel line I already had and routed it up to the top of the firewall to a motorbike fuel filter and just cable tied it all in place, just follow the brake lines from the diff to the body and allow a bit for flex etc.......oh and keep it away from the exhaust of course! Fuel line is probably best, but also expensive.

Got a snatch strap? Don't leave home without it.

You don't have to worry about breathers as GU's came with breather extansions from factory.

the rear diff (on my ute anyway, and im preety sure the 3L has the same one) only has an extension up to the crossmember directly above it. its not that flash so i extended mine up to the engine bay. i used copper tube and a piece of fuel hose from the diff to the copper which is attached to the chassis rail

I've been told that i should replace the tubing that i used because it is to soft (just some "scrap" i found at work) and on sudden suction the hose will simply crush on itself, and the diff will go back to sucking crap in through seals. mickyd555 has the right idea with the copper, as long as it is large enough diametre that it will allow enough air to pass on sudden suction, before the diff decides that it wants to suck through seals.

i used fuel line for the soft hose bit, as i stated. i decided on fuel line because i figure the remote possibility that any diff oil or even the vapour from it may damage the hose. i used 3/8 copper for the majority of the run besides a small length of 1/4 to adapt the fuel hose to the copper line. i figure its not something that im gonna check that often so if i did it right the first time it should be the only time i do it.

Even GQ's had these, but they are still very exposed to water ingress if in water any higher than knee deep.

The reason i used fuel line is for the reasons mickyd said, and marin I've heard of your problem before and it apparently does happen.

I can guarantee that the rear breather on the current 3.0 GU is inadequate for anything higher than about knee deep as someone already stated - I had to change my rear diff oil after this relatively shallow boghole on saturday: http://www.monster4x4.com.au/gallery2/m ... temId=2666

I just had a look on my GU 2000 and it has a factory diff breather on the rear right up to the fuel filler.Are you saying this is no good? I dont think any body normal would go in water that deep if you didnt have to.

mine's an '05, and the breather only goes up to the top of the rear fuel tank. As I said, the rear diff took in water in only the depth shown in that pic

Be careful, I would be pretty confident that it dissapears into the cross member near the fuel tank and stops. So when you go through knee deep water in a stock suspended patrol your going to have water going everwhere and straight down the breather into the diff.......pays to be sure, you might want to go and check that again! Its worth the effort to fit extentions, beeive me!
