Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Gonna make roof rack for GQ. 18MM tube looks best I think. What do you think 16 gauge for supports spanning gutter to gutter and 18 gauge for the rest of it. Don`t have sophisticated tube bender but thought that I may be able to bend it with heat and a decent plumbers bending frame or filled with sand sealed at both ends, heated and bent accordingly. It will be powder coated to finish. Less than one third the cost of ARB. Any tips or ideas. Any photos of racks that I could get ideas from. Full length for LWB.

25mm RHS for the main frame of it; I think it was 2.5mm wall. The bar is 3mm I think.

It's not that heavy but it's strong enough to carry any amount of weight I would be willing to put on the gutters.

Obviously I also added some mesh as a floor. It has sides but not a front or back as I carry long stuff sometimes; I also made a thing that slides into a slot on the bullbar and can support longer items, so carrying 6.5 metres or more of steel is no problem at all.

It's now on my LWB as the SWB is sold and I am going to lengthen it a bit to suit the longer vehicle better.

Thanks mate that`s interesting. You must have some Scots or Irish in you that you avoided giving ARB a fistfull of dollars . I thought of rhs as it`s stronger. My thinking was to make one that looked like the arb one with more metal but lighter section. Food for thought.

was thinking of copying the arb one myself

You could get a metal place to do all the bends for you, like get them to bend up the front and rear lengths and then just sleeve and weld tube between them for the sides.

the tube ones look alot better in my opinion.

I built mine from 25mm electrical conduit . It is full length on a 75 series
troop carrier. When I made the gutter brackets I put 4 on each side and
joined them all together with 8mm round bar which made it a very solid
but light unit. I weigh over 100kgs and I can walk around on it without
hesitation. When I say I joined the gutter brackets together I meant
that the round bar sits directly in the gutter. After it was powder coated and fit to the truck it looked as good as anything you buy retail.

excellent Troopian. Did you bend conduit with the sparks or plumbers bending frame. ? Any pics?

i had to read that twice, im assuming you used galvanisd conduit.......
