Better Fuel Economy

Hey all. Just in the market to buy a 1989 GQ SWB, but I'm a little worried about the fuel consumption. I'm 19 and I'm definately not made of money. Just wondering if people have some suggestions on what I can do to make the fuel consumption better. I was considering putting in a dual fuel system, but after pricing them up I'm not sure whether it will be worth it in the long run. Any suggestions would be helpful. Getting fair amped to pick it up on sunday hopefully.

Petrol GQ's are thirsty.. Which engine?

Theres not much you can do to make them economical.. but that depends on what you call economical.. 20ltr/100klms is usual. As I say THIRSTY.

If you want dual fuel better off buying one with it already fitted - they're common enough and the cost of fitting $2000 or so is not reflected in the resale price.

I have an LPG system for it sitting in the garage doing nothing but even so the effort and $$$$ in fitting it doesnt make it worthwhile (as it's not a daily driver).

Would you consider LWB? Lots more LWB are on LPG.

IMHO paying $5k or so extra for a diesel does not make much sense - it takes so many more years to make back the money unless you're doing huge milages - and if so you should buy something cheaper to run in the first place.

Yeah we've all had this little argument once or twice before.

leve the exaust system the stock or it changes your torque range.

i speak from experence.

i am also 19 years of age and my gq LWB 4.2L dose about 400ks to a tank
but then again its only a weekend car realy.

i changed my exhaust to a 2.5" straight though system with Extractors (mostly because my Stock Manifold and Muffler had holes in them)

I haven't noticed any change in torque, yet i have gained power and also fuel economy. I was hitting 400K's to the tank of LPG, after changing to the system i got 450K's to a tank, now i fitted a Pointless Ignition system, its 500Ks to the tank. and thats city driving, Freeway i am getting close to 750. not a bad setup for a LPG patrol

Just a quick question. If I can get a decent full time LPG gas system for $800 with Gas Research LPG system.

Includes:

S440 Gas Carby (mixer).

comes with 3 x assorted tunning jets.

Gas Converter B2.

Lock off valve.

Assorted water hoses and tee pieces to plumb into heater hoses.

2 x 85 litre gas tanks. 1 x 65 litre gas tank.

Assorted gas hoses and fittings.

Do you think this is a good deal? How much do you recon it would cost to get installed?

:) cheers

of course you would if your old manifold and exhaust was phuked, it would now be back to standard power/torque.

Most LPG places are booked out until Feb/March at the moment.. or they were the a month ago when people were shopping for it..

Is it worth it? Depends on what you want to do with the truck. If you ever intend to go touring in it, it will be useless, no Gas in remote aussie.

YWBF..

No i hit the right key

I did a trip to Banora Point from Hornsby. Filled the Mav up at Hornsby full to brim of LPG (98L my tank takes from bone dry) and didn't have to fil up untill just the other side of Grafton. and yes when i filled up at Hornsby i hit the reset counter on my Trip meter.

No petrol used at all on the trip, Refilled at Grafton and was on the way to Banora Point (Tweed Heads). If that isn't good economy, i don't know what is. running 33's and the new exhaust system them.

Is your speedo recalibrated to suit the 33 inch tyres???, that would affect the reading.

No its not. But if you remember, i would be going faster than what my speedo says

so say for example, i was reading 100, i would possibly be at 105 or 110. which would read on the trip meter less K's than i am doing. cause the wheels are turning less to go further.

I would doubt it myself if i wasn't driving all the way up there in the car myself

Was a trip to Frasier Island that i did witht he old man. He drove his toy Kia and i drive my Patrol. We both had to fill up at Grafton, so i was getting the same Economy as he was in his 2 Litre Petrol engine as i was with a 6cylinder.

In fact it makes me laugh, i am running my car for less than what he is, and i have a beasty 4.2L 6 cylinder and he has a 2L 4 Cylinder.

MYGQ,

Can you give details on your pointless ignition system (brand, cost etc). I've just done the dual fuel thing and this sounds like it might be worth concidering as well. :D

Hey,

For best economy, Don't drive through city traffic, Drive with featherweight foot not lead foot change gears at low rpm (before 3k) don't use 5th @ 60km/h, learnt a lot about fuel economy from driving '90 GQ with RB30ET.

As for economy, $50 worth of Mobil Syngrey 8000, i can acheived 300-350km if i drive like a granny, but my driving style isn't granny style so my economy is 300km that includes City traffic, some freeway driving, couple of pass in winding road (driving hard, shifting @ 5k rpm) and few drive @ local roads in spirited driving style. (time for me to get sports car!)

As for LPG, i'd say 50% LWB GQ has already got LPG system so shopping for 1, check the owner's driving habit, service record, because LPG kills valves due their 'dry fuel' nature. And check for idle, some patrol i've looked has rough idle, important to check this.

I personally don't think LPG is worth as this kind of fuel does make engine more hotter than Turbocharger package in petrol engine, higher risk od damaging head and valves. But it's all up to you and your wallet, most importantly, what do you want to use the car for?

Hope this help.

Cheers

Grant

750 km Freeway driving...
:?:

Thats 12.6 litres per 100km.

The best I ever achieved was 420km.

I`d like to find out what sort of LPG system it is.Best i got was 400km of freeway (110-120 and down shifting at 1800 rpm up hills) and 350 around town and thats in my gutless carby.
I always change around 2500 rpm in city and freeway.

Well here is my driving habbits

i use about 1/2 to 3/4 throttle to accelerate to prevent labouring hte motor

I cahnage gears around 2200RPM

i use alot of engine breaking even on road.

Freeway i sit on 100 or 110K's per hour,

I backshift if going up steep hills and am known to run the engine to 4000RPM if i need to accelerate up hills on the freeway.

Honestly i ain't sure what kinda setup i have, I brought the car 2nd hand and it was pre-installed.

You'd really have to come over ot have a look at it. but its no flash setup

Just a simple ring setup screwed down to the stock carby. uses the original air filter box setup.

Only major changes its had are extractors, 2.5" system stright through, Pointless Dizzy setup.

All the running gear is stil the stock Maverick stuff and i am running 33's on road at the pressent.

2200rpm mine is just startin to feel like its pushing. Similar setup to yours. 33 cooper st's impco gas, pirhana ignition, extractors and exhaust.

could possibly be the exhaust robbing the low down torque? as I'm getting 350ish avg per tank (only a 70l usable tho)

No i never said i was 19. thats the guy with a 3L Patrol

I am 25.

As for my setp shakes i am pretty sure its not Impco setup. if from memory, Impco have a funny round air cleaner and the LPG unit sits at the top of the filter housing

Mine has the original Nissan cleaner unit, it has 2 holes drilled into the bottom where the LPG lines come in, then it goes to a donut ring that sits directly on top of the carby (physically screwed into it). I actually have to remove the screws and the donut to remove the filter housing from the carby

I know a couple of people in our club with Impco LPG patrols and have been complaining about how they don't have much power, have taken one for a spin myself and i will say it lacks the power that mine generates.

Though nothing beats the feel of a EFI Dual Fuel, much more response than mine.

I think that it`s the same as mine. Can you get me some pics please?
Also do you have anything in the centre of the "donut, like a restrictor or anything?

No there is nothing in the middle

Mines the same as MyGQ. Donut technology. Convertor is some Italian thing by MTM but has Boemo Eng. PTY LTD on it as well. But I've got not as much power as petrol and it dies in the ass after 3000rpm. I put it down to the convertor though, too old and never serviced. At least the factory air cleaner stays and allows a snorkle.

by MyGQ
My converter was serviced by me (yeah i know can be stupid to do that, but hay, was simple job) and since then i have gotten a bit of power back, not as much as petrol but enought

What do ppl run their timing at on LPG? mine is at 14 above TDC
