Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Having pulled the factory front bull bar off the 80 to service the premier winch as some knob had welded it in there, I couldnt believe how heavy the be'arch was. the old girl loves corners now.

my question is if i am going to build a light weight winch bar do you guys just relocate the control panel box to sit ontop of the bar or whats the go?

also, the aluminium tube that hangs down for the air con - can than be moved or relocated ?

You can relocate it to sit in the engine bay if you like. You can purchase a lot smaller solonoid system too, for $220 if that helps. You may need to lengthen the cables if so use bigger diameter ones.

While your at it it might pay you to check the power to your winch is isolated. Know 2 people who have sufferred major damage to their vehicles in Sydney after having winches proffessioanlly fitted. Either disconnect the power lead to the battery under the bonet or I think some people use the marine style switches underneath to isolate the power.

What can happen is someone with spare time runs your winch cable either over your roof and connects it to your tow bar or they run it under the car in front of you and then short out the controller pins which then happily winds the cable in to either the battery gives in or your roof/radiator etc!

There are plenty of 4x4's getting round that have winches wired up permanently!

thanks guys, will be sure to do both suggestions i think. the original box IS too big and ive heard b4 about ppls trucks getting winched flat - dont want that to happen 2 my beast.

My solenoid box is under the bonnet up near the firewall. I also fitted, at great expense, a Warn socket to the front bar and an in-cab switch.

If I did it again I wouldn't worry about the socket in the bar.
