Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Just got a new winch cable and stepped up to 10mm instead of the 8mm I was using. The hook that came with the new cable is probably rated enough but just doesnt look as tough as the hook I had on the 8mm cable.

But the problem is the new hook will not go onto the 10mm cable because the space in the hook where the cable goes is not big enough...

Now if I havent confused you all already....please read on!

So how important is the thing that helps the cable make a loop at the spliced end. I dont know what its called, but it basically has the loop in the cable rapped around it...(I assume to help keep that shape)...or is it more to keep the cable from getting a kink in it.

Would it be wise to remove this and just put a new spliced loop in the cable to save me from buying a new hook that will fit? Or will a kink occur and result in a weak point in the cable.

God...I have succesfully confused myself...hope you guys can make sence of it!

no u dont need it if u want to use it just use a d-shackle

My cable doesn`t have the hard loop in it that you are talking about and I have never broken a cable yet in 6 to 7 years of having a winch. Yes it has done a lot of work and a lot of hard pulls.

It's called a thimble and I had the same problem. I prefer to have the thimble as it distributes the load evenly whereas other people remove it.

This is how I fixed my hook issue.

I am using steel cable...couldnt afford the rope stuff!

I was thinking of just using a rated shackle...obviously you have had no dramas with doing this?

thats a saftey hook with hammer lock, try pwb anchor an australian company that make chains and etc for lifting in construction, very nice products check out there herk alloy range of chains

try blackwoods, they sold pwb anchor last time i was there

Try Keebles Trading or Coventry Fasteners for that hook

stay away from blackwoods they charge nearly double what everyone else charges, i suggest trying either beaver or nobles

is the hook from your 8mm cable rated high enough? or are you going on "beefyness looks"?

and with the thimble, as pointed out above it spreads the load. how much would a new hook be? is it worth the small saving, considering your playing with very lethal forces?
