I'm going to upgrade my 265/75/16 A/T tyres around the middle of Jan for a set of 285/75/16 M/T's. To save money, I'm only thinking about buying 4. As the spare on the Landcruiser lives underneath, I was thinking of getting a skinny rim (perhaps a split rim) and suitable tyre to I can improve the departure angle and reduce the chance of doing damage to the spare. My question are, what size rim would I need to look at (width wise) and what size tyre should I put on it to basically give me an equivalent size to the M/T's that I'm going to get?

i have a factory toyota split rim as a spare under my 80 series, with a skinny all terrain tire on it ... It looks like i dont have a spare there at all, it sits up there really neatly. The towbar wraps around it, which means it never touches the ground .. I cant imagine why anyone would run a larger spare for day to day driving, and as for day 4x4 trips, if i get a puncture and need to use the spare, i'm going home after i put it on. No good continuing without a spare.

Do you happen to know what size tyre it is and does it matter if the spare isn't the same size as the other 3 in the event you have to use it? I know that alot of modern cars run space saver spares but I've heard that you shouldn't do it on a contant 4wd. Your set up sounds the as I want to run. Skinny spare tucked well out of the way so it doesn't drag on anything.
