Different Shocks?

Hey fellas,

I'm going to lift my Rocky 2-3" and just wondering if you can use a Hilux (or similar) shock in place of the standard ones?? Just need a bit longer travel and would be better than getting some dear a$$ Ranchos or the likes...

We're going to try some spring packers in the rear above the coils and wind up the torsion bars at the front.

Just wondering what to do with the shock absorbers....

75 series
VS/VR....IIRC

and remember, the longer the shock-the less compression u may have

Do you know if they'd fit onto my Rocky murcod??

Spartacus... by using the 75 and 80 series shocks.. can you use the front and rears respectively in my rocky??
Or say the front from one model and rears from another... not something silly like the rears from one go in the front of mine etc.. lol

What have you used personally?

Not sure, they're stud one end and loop the other- see what you need for the Rocky. I can measure the loop / stud if they look like a possiblilty? Also try and work out what lengths you need- the length of them is listed on that link.

ive used 75pin-eye in the front, and a mate uses 80 series/commo pairing in his SWB

Today I forked out and bought some Rancho RS5000 front shocks that were listed for the F78 Rocky.

Took me about 30mins to install them...

This is the most beneficial suspension/handling upgrade I have done on any car ever! :armsup: :armsup:

It has eliminated the enormous amounts of bodyroll I had previous and this is only after doing the front shocks. The rears will not be far off no doubt!!

I am this happy and I havn't even been offroad yet.. only onroad driving.. I think I will only become happier after that. :D
I bought them for a bit better shock travel.. not knowing it would increase handling like it has!

I recommend this upgrade to anyone who's shocks are getting on in age! :D

Just to add my bit regarding alternative shocks replacement.
Being a poor bast.rd, anything that's free and works I'll try.

I've got the electronically "adjustable" shocks for a live axle front/rear blizzard.
I found out that the some hilux shocks fit them and switched the electronic rear shocks off a IFS model to my rear, (free off a cobber).
However the front IFS ones were too short.

I've just fitted my old rear delica 87 rear shocks to my front, as they were the same length.
Works a treat, though will need to put rubber boots onto the shocks to prevent water/dirt going in, as they only fit upside down.
Only thing is that they aren't eletronically adjustable. But as they're free, I can't complain.

im gettin 60 series shocks coz they free
and they are bigger
if they dont fit well....meh they was free il just stick them in the pile with the rest of my useless crap
and remember, the longer the shock-the less compression u may have
compression aint everything

sorry drop. how far ur shock can extrend

all i was sayin was that i think drop is more important than compression.

I think he means compression as in the force put on the shock piston to aid in slowing the movement... Eg. - Compression and Rebound.
Not the compression as in how far up the shock can travel.

But you are both saying valid points... You need a shock with the right compression/rebound characteristics for your particular car and also need shock with long enough extension to cater for the correct amount of drop (wheel down travel) and also wheel up-travel. :D

i mean if u put shocks that are too long on, as one side droops, the other
side cant compress as far due to the longer internals. gives good drop
but average compression

The bump stops are supposed to limit the travel- not the shocks! You will quickly stuff your shocks if they are compressing fully and bottoming out.

BTW Spartacus I did a little editing to your post- I think you know which part... ;)
