Hey Fellas...

This is a LWB GQ MAV. 3" springs 33" tyres..
Noticed tonight on my way home i could smell my brakes...
Had been doing no heavy braking or stupid stuff.

Front brakes you could really smell and were really Hot, Rears were hot but not smelling and not as hot as front..

Also just before this When slightly turning left or right the steering wheel would shake like mad..

Any ideaS?

Cheers
Stewie

hey bogged..

Is that a very big job to do??
I have done wheel bearings on my commodore Before How Does it compare?

Any idea of rough cost for the bearing kits?.

Cheers

To remove inner and outer bearings, re-grease, and replace, if you were in a hurry, 20mins per front wheel.

Remove wheel, remove caliper, remove hub, remove locking nut, slide all the crap off. (not much further to get to the CV to re-grease that while your here)...

remove seal on back of disc, and out comes inner bearing.

Grease the lot, throw it all back as it came off.

I think the bearing #'s are listed in the Parts # thread.

The shakes might be wheel bearings, I'm not a mechanic by any means but could it have something to with the load proportioning valve on your rear end after the spring lift? Could mean its braking harder on the fronts than it should? 3" may not make a huge difference but it might depending on the set up?

I might also be completely wrong.....?

berretta could be right, alot of people including myself zip tie the valve closed after a lift to balance the braking, not the most scientific way of doing it, you could make up a bracket which relocates the unit 3in higher to accomodate the spring lift, what brand of pads are you using, not those crappy ferodo items are ya (very dusty, very hot, overheat=smelly crap brakes)
hope it helps

GQ's have vented discs front and rear. But if you have been in some thick mud the vents fill. Not sure how to clean them as mine only got bad just before I rid of it. But planned on trying the pressure hose or screwdriver. Or the other option is while the whole lot is off to do the wheel bearings put new disc and pads on (I got some, just dont have a car).

Hey guys just a thought it coudl be the calipers sticking.... on dads patrol 2 inch lift 33's we have just replaced all the pistons in the calipers due to pitting and rust in them. So maybe check they arent sticking first

Hey guys,
Thanks for all information and help on this matter..

I pulled the wheels off and took calipers off and drivers side pad was missing a little section of pad which was lodged in between the disk and backing plate..

So i put new pads in and has been good so far..

Cheers all..
