I would rebuild motor first unless it has low k's but still I would rebuild it.
Dont forget being a petrol you have to decompress the head. Also I would be concerned about the torque range as I had a vl turbo and it had lag till about 3000rpm.Which means once you decompress the head you will find it a little gutless below that rev range.
I had a mate with a 22r motor in his hilux it was carby too.We put all the gear on the motor and decompressed it.On the beach it was really boggy at low revs until the turbo spooled up and then it really had some go.But we had problems with detonation and heat and ended putting water injection on it.Wasnt too reliable and honestly was a pain to drive off road.I would strongly suggest putting a v8 in it.
Hope this helps -Marty

Yeah have to admit im not a fan of turbo off road. had a Sd33 then went to a sd33t and found i am always in a smaller gear to keeo the revs up. If it drops to near idle its all over.
But its all a compromise.
Cheers

We used to run the VL turbo's in the Highway Patrol and from memory you would hear the turbo start whistling from between 1800 to 2000 rpm. Great cars and the most reliable cruisers we have ever had IMHO.
Turbo on RB

Its one of the few engines that can be turboed with standard n/a compression.
I have turboed countless VLs patrols and skylines with up to 300 000 on the clock never had a prob.
Keep the boost under 10psi with a reasonable intercooler and use premium.
Keep your cam in it and use the long non turbo VL inlet manifold.
If you shop carefully you should be able to get the whole show happening for under 2grand, so some may say its not the most suitable engine for off road but I can t complain especially beach work and they are a hell of a lot quiker than the new V8 landcruiser.
Its not a V8 and never will be but a good value upgrade.
cheers Brunsy

Buy yourself the complete kit....turbo manifolds(inlet.exhaust)injecters.crossover pipe.Buy yourself basic aftermarket computer (fuel/timing) with harness.fit 3inch exhaust....etc
Trust me don't decomp it.Most will tell you that the engine won't last but if tuned and boost is keept at say 7psi-unleaded or 10-12psi optimax it will be fine.
I turboed my n.a vl commo myself as above but with standerd turbo computer and avo stage 1 intercooler(very small).Std turbo injecters.3inch zorst.I was running around 12psi on optimax.Power of boost was awsome(compared to low comp turbo engine 7.8-1 vs 9.0-1) and on boost was amazing.
Some will say that power/torque wont be enuf to pull the gq.....but imo it will be a perfect powerplant.
I had approx 185rwkw in the vl.If you set yours up at about 7psi with cooler it will make about 140kwatw which is more than enuf and be very reliable.Just remember dont get exited with running big boost-the more boost-you will have cooling issue's.
And by the way boost will come on at around 1800rpm......but in a gq-more weight-more load-i think it will spool up even quicker.
