Sloppy gearshift?

Post by flavze »

Hey there everybody, i just got myself a stock 89 sierra with 100,000 kays on it an it's all pretty good cept for a few things. One of which is that the gearbox has the sloppiest shifter i've ever experienced, i was wondering what the go is with them as far as bushes an such as to what people have found to fix such a problem.
It's a fair bit worse than my brothers drover gearbox which has done a heap more kays.

It's also fairly growly in 1st,2nd and 3rd gears, 4th is quiet and 5th is fairly whiny. I was wondering what oil people have found to be the best to run in them for quiet running?

Cheers...Nath.

P.S. Love the site, well set out and i've already found out heaps of stuff just lookin round and searchin. Got a few plans for the lil fella to toughen it up a bit so it's gonna be good hangin around.

G'day, have a look in the sierra bible, heaps of info in there about oils and everything else. I usually use castrol vmx80 in the gearbox.
As for the sloppyness there is a special bolt which screws into the collar at the base of the gear shifter, this was really worn on myne, and was snapped on my bro's, only cost about 3 bucks for a new one and was easy as to replace.
