80 Series Gearbox Chirrup

I have a chirruping noise from the gearbox on the 80 series which disappears when the clutch is depressed. The noise is there whether in neutral or when driving.

Is this likely to be the front input shaft bearing?

The box is also a bit sticky shifting into 1st and 2nd when cold (not that that's particluarly uncommon from what I can make out) so the synchros could be on the way out too.

Anyway, question is, am I up for a rebuild? I'm hoping not but am preparing for a lean Xmas.

Bucking fox...or *ucking box....lol
Use Castrol vmx-m in the 5 speed....big difference to changing....sounds like it is your clutch throw out bearing...if the noise goes when you rest your foot on the clutch pedal or when clutch depressed, then this is a possibility...the spigot bearing will squeel when waiting in gear with clutch depressed...this will cause change problems...
Hope its the former...there is no problem leaving it like that...

Thanks Andrew

Confirms what I heard from the LCOOL list and from a friend.

Have a good Xmas.
