Engine Swap question - for all U with non Feroza engines....

Hey all,
I am planning a bit long term here - you see, I like my little Roza, and am spending much time keeping the body in one peice, so maybe want to look at future engine change....
I just want a bit more power, but keep it reliable (no twin turbo's!)... Was thinking something like a 2L mitsu motor or a Nissan RB20DET - non-turbo of course (ok, would love a turbo, but this thing does not corner well, and my licence is a bit weakish still from my BA Falcon and 750CC mbike!)
Any suggenstions? I guess the nissan appeals as it is a decent power hike, but still a small 2L and they are pretty fool proof if you don't pump 10PSI of boost into them.......
I know I will have to make custom engine mounts and stuff, but would I use the roza gearbox or a nissan one - since the transfer case hangs off the back of the box anyway?
What would be easier - to fabricate the join to the gearbox or the transfer case?

That is the $64M question !
No one makes an adapter for the Daihatsu Gearbox to moount to any engine that you decide to swap in.......also, don't think you will be able to 'divorce' the transfer case from the Feroza.
If you're thinking of doing an engine swap, it will be easier, cheaper and easier to get engineered if you utilise all the components from a donor vehicle......Toyota comes to mind !!
Basically Engine swap = Driveline swap..............then while you're at it, you may as well SAS it !!!

Ahhh - now I see why peop;le do the toyo swap - I need the whole @$#@# driveline! Ahhhh!
Oh well, guess I start looking at toyo options - maybe a 2l Rav4 Engine and driveline.......

If looking at Toyota 4cyl engines, look at a 3RZ-FE (2.7L DOHC 4cyl) can be found in 98-04 Hiluxs, so a pretty common engine and goes pretty good for a 4cyl. Then stick an W56 or G52 gearbox and Transfer behind it from Hiluxs previous to this as the front driveshaft is on the drivers side. Being all Hilux bits, there are plenty around and shouldn't be to expensive to get old of.

I've always thought that one of the Vitara engines / drivelines would probably fit in quite nicely. Plenty of engine sizes to choose from - 1.6, 2.0, 2.5 V6, 2.7 V6. The 2.0l 4cyl is good for over 100kW IIRC.

Was it a hard job Andrew?? Did it require a lot of custom fabrication and work to fit it in there?
Did it go really well on and off road??

The Piglet (Scat) goes and plays well offroad with the 3.8L V6 Commodore. More than enough power to turn the 35"Bias Claws. Has bundera front diff and Hilux rear.

Toyota 2.7L 4cyl. Keep the W59 bell housing and any W or G series 5 speed will bolt up. Conservatively rated at 150 hp but more like 160. Ram pod, headers and hotwires around 180hp. Will chirp 35" tyres from a stop. Gets about the same gas milage as the 1.6L Daihatsu as long as you can keep your foot out of it. Excelent acceleration and does not bog down on hills.

Was the 2.7 a hard swap? Did you use all the Toyo bits (like radiator, etc)?

Any engine swap will be difficult even for professional mechanics. There are a lot of things to work out while you are doing it. Like power steering, brake system, ECU electrical, body electrical, exhaust system, cooling system etc. And a lot of little things to work out.
I already had Toyota axles. The front one is from an `85 4Runner and the rear from a `91 truck. The radiator was from a Toyota 2.4L 4Runner, the engine from a `96 Tacoma, transmission from a `94 4Runner, transfer cases from a `85 4Runner and `90 truck, Marlin adapter, custom exhaust, custom driveshafts, FROR cross member and skid plate, custom engine mounts.
Lots of work and lots of money but well worth it in the end. I can find all parts at the dealership or salvage yard. I'm not concerned about breaking down anywhere because I know that parts are available quickly.
There are two different flanges on Toyota drive shafts/ axles and one of them will bolt up to Feroza axles. One needed to be double drilled. I had the Feroza enging, transmission and transfer case and drive shafts bolted to Toyota axles for about 4 years.
I wanted to keep the Daihatsu for a long time and wanted all Toyota drive train. The 2.7L is a great engine.
