I was checking out things on my shorty this arvo before another trip away and when I put the front air locker on and tried to turn it didnt feel quite right.
I had it on the front lawn and when I tried turning right I had f*ck all turning circle, which normally happens with the locker engaged. But when I tried turning right I found I pretty much had almost all of my turning circle...or as much of it as you can get in 4 low. I got my mate looking at it from front on to see if both wheels were turning at the same time when the locker was on and he said that when turning right they were and when turning left they werent?
Have I busted a CV??....I dont remember hearing a crunch, bang, crackle or pop for quite a while so I am not entirely sure. I shall have to investigate further tomorrow arvo.
This is a bit of a pain in the ar$e considering I am pissing off on holidays on friday :bad-words:

if the cv joint 'big ball bearing' holders are worn, they can catch on the ball bearing, and you loose your turning circle. I found out mine were knackered going round a suburban roundabout, ending up on the footpath

Im interested in this as I have a clicking from front left as well but in 2wd as well... when I drive straight or turn, so Ive been told if it clicks when driving straight, it aint a CV

Are your steering stops adjusted the same to acheive the same angle in degrees (lock to lock)?

What brand of steering stab do you have, is it the right length - might be limiting the steering on compression or extension.

Quickest way is to take it down to ormeau, drive it up the bumcrack with the locker off, wait till the wheels are spinning, snap second (even try third), then engage locker. You'll find out if you have done a cv :D . Then take it for a drive on flat ground, , locker in, and compare the new sound(s) it makes to how it used to sound.

GQ cvs can quite often break the star (in a non-catastrophic break) , burr off the spline and there is not much crunching around, until the star fragments and displaces the inner axle off centre (the outer is held firm by the circlip behind the hub locking handle) causing the steering to bind up - the outer bell can look completely undamaged. There might be enough resistance to feel the locker engaged on soft ground (or turning the wheels by hand, vehicle raised on jack, locker engaged) to see if there is any crunching or bad stuff goin on.
