brake pad limits

i was advised that the brake pads on the truck are at their limit and will need replacing.

i inspected them a couple of months back and they still had at least 7 mm of pad left, but the mechanic said they should be replaced when they have the the same thickness pad as the metal plate that it is attatched to. is this the case or am being led down the path.

From what I have been told, the last part of the pad for some reason is where most of the disc abrasion occurs. Dunno why though. I notice a lot of places say the pads are worn out when theres still a lot of meat left.

Assuming we both haven't been fed the same crap.

Just reading the EBC propaganda. Replace the pads when they get down to the last 3mm (1/8")

I recall now who told me re the rotor and pad wear. It was my old boss, and that was his experience on his race cars.

Thinner (worn) pads simply have less mass to act as a heat sink when braking, which can lead to overheating of the compound. Generally manufacturers recommend changing 'em while there's still some meat, to allow for any tapered wearing of the pads, to prevent the backing plate gouging the discs.

Remember that a typically good quality pad has little hooks protruding a couple millimetres from the plate to help anchor the friction compound.

as bigpat said, the thinner the brake pads the hotter they`ll get and reduce your braking effects.
I replace my race bike pads when they are 1/4 worn, can really feel the diffrence between new pads and say ones that are 1/2 worn .

Pads arent expensive or hard to replace so you could do this yourself too.

I was under the impression that most pads had a wear indicator in the form of a groove that indicated when to replace them.
Just a thought, correct me if I'm wrong.

the grove is just for cooling and allowing gas's to escape the minimuim i would let go is 3mm anything under that i would replace
