hey fella's and, ladies???
Im sure this has been done before, i did a search but really found nothing, im looking for a zook, it will be used for road 70%, 30% fun, i currently own a 10in overall lifted gq turbo with lockers, so you could imagine my idea of fun!, ive sold it and looking for a zook, i want it to be drivable but when im off road i want some thing flexy and mildly cabable, i hear from coily owners....get coils, and leaf owners.....get leaves, so can you give me the pros and cons of both setups, i wanna hear what you think of both, this would be a great hand.
thanks heaps

thanks for that, but id like to start a discussion about factory coils and leaves and their pros and cons, but i wanna hear what a leaf owner thinks are the pros and cons of leaf and coil standard rigs, no just a one eyed biast opinion eg. i have leaves they rule, springs suck, i would really like to hear the backup for the claims, from mods to drivability if ya know what i mean, itll make my decision heaps easier
, ps cant wait to get one soon
cheers

If you want it for 70% road than a coily is more comfortable to drive on road than a leafy and can be slightly improved upon to give medium off road ability.
The leafy seems easier to modify to get good offroad results but harsher onroad and getting a little long in the tooth.

I got rid of my coiler cause i kept ripping the rear trailing arms off diff tube. other then that the ride was as you'd expect for a SHORT whel base vehicle. coils are shit load more comfortable then leaves and offer ok articulation however leaves would be the way to go for an offroader. mainly cause it seems the $$$ factor goes a long way on a leave zuk compared to modding a coiler.
i got rid of my coiler 2 years ago so im guessing theres alot more out there now.

This problem is easily fixed with some 3mm steel strengthening the brackets

i've gone from coils to leaf in the front of mine, and the difference in ride is barely noticable. properly setup, each one can flex and ride well.
havin said that, coily sierras are a pos apparently if u wanna do anything more than mild wheeling, certainly not as strong as a patrol. so if u want a sierra, go leafs. they're proven, and they work.

I would kill to have a factory coil set-up on my samurai/sierra. I'm building a street zook, so the coils would be better suited for my situation. plus I could get custom coils made to drop the suspension about 2-3 inchs and toy with stiffness and such.
ANYONE WANT TO SHIP ME A COMPLETE FACTORY COILY SUSPENSION?
I think the leafs and coily share similar frame mounting points.

Zuku26,
Coil sierras have a totally different chassis design and share no suspension mounting points with a leaf sprung sierra.
The front axle is totally different to allow fitment of the panhard rod, the front diff is reverse rotation to allow for the tie rod behind the diff.
A good percentage of the reason why coil sierras drive better on road than leaf cars is that there are a heap of little mods to the tub, body mounts, doors, doorseals, even the transfer case mounts (not to mention the transfer case being chain driven) to make them quieter and more refined.
Stock, coil sierras have very little compression travel (comparable to a leaft car stock) and are underdamped and sprung so they blow through to the bumpstops pretty quickly to all up I don't think they ride all that much better than a leaf car.
You certainly couldn't lower a coiler 2" and retain anything like a usable ride- you'd spend a lot of time boucing down the road, import tuner style.

I guess lucky for me I have no front diffs, a benefit of having a factory 2wd. I saw a few pics online once of a suspension on a coily and it looked as though the mounting on the frame was identical to the leafs. it looked like the suzuki built a coil suspension as a direct replacement for the leafs. Is this possible to have been the case with the first year of the coily's production. I know during the first year or 2 they were making both coily and leafs.

well with my experence with my coily zook, they go hard
just need to strenthen the trailing arms and it will go harder than a stock leaf
and by the sounds of it, u want a mainly road car so go the coily.

you can build either to be big but the SJ80 coil sprung sierra needs a lit more $$$$$$ to do so
