steel to stainless

I have just built a new surge tank for my zook out of stainless but what would be the best way to put my inlet, outlet pipes in? they are steel out of a standard tank, and the surge tank is about 2mm stainless.

Thanks Rhett

sliver solder or braze them in. but if you have gone to all that trouble to make it out of stainless then just make up some stainless fittings and tig weld them in

I agree. Surely it is not very hard to make stainless fittings as well?

That said, I have had good results welding stainless and steel together with stainless welding rods, but I don't know if I would trust the welds to be leakproof.

just buy stainless sockets and weld them in

you can weld the two very successfully with an alloy rod/wire. s/steel or mild rods/wire works but takes skill to look good. I cannot remember the alloy off the top of my head but welding shops will know basically its a mild / s/steel blend like a low grade stainless.

i would avoid welding thick fittings to 2mm sheet as it WILL stress crack long term. the weld area and fitting combined thickness must not be more than 4mm (double the sheet) or the stress concentration will be high and with the vibrational load fuel lines give - leaks result

cheers bru

youll be surprised how easily std 0.9 mm steel migs will weld stainless steel and mild steel together, give it a go on a piece of scrap, then you only have to paint your filler neck to stop it rusting.
paint it silver!

You use a 309 stainless rod/wire to weld steel to stano...

If you are using stick there is a specific rod for "dissimilar" metals but stainless rods flow really good on that kind of job if all you have is arc.

Yarno's right, 309 is a good match also another one which I prefer is 308L. The "L" signifies a low carbon content which is a good idea as the stainless will pickup some carbon from the steel anyway. 309 is also available as 309L as well.

Noooooooooooooo

309L please...... OR 309MoL if you can get it as it welds better.

308L is type 304L SS which is the basic Austentic grade, not a good choice for a dissimilar metal weld. There is a huge difference between 308L and 309L.

I agree.
Cigweld "Weldall" rods will do the job! Great for stainless to mild steel.
I have used them for years for this application with no problems.

Amacron420 rods do a good job of SS to mild welding... Never had any issues with the weld integrity and have put some of these welds under a fair stress loading.

you can get stainless fittings/ pieces you require from a marine shop

like bias boating or
adalong they are located in sydney but they will ship it out to you

missus worked in a stainless/ally shop and directed people that way or even for there own supplys
