Sub Tank Woes

Has anyone had dramas with their sub tank switchover on a 2005 GU 4.2TDI ute? Mine had a fault light come up and when i rang Nissan Aust they said there was a fault with them and to take it to my local dealer and they would fix it. So off i went to Nissan and after having it all day they told me they had just cleared the code and it was my fault because it is "Heavily Accessorised" and the fault would keep coming up and they would not cover it with warranty. When i asked them what was causing it they could not tell me. The only accessories i have on it are my in car phone kit, a UHF and a turbo timer. All of them are wired through relays except the turbo timer.
Anyway, i wasn't real happy at the time and by the time i got home the fault light was back up anyway!
I'm no guru on computers but i think they were having a lend of me.

there is no earth lead between the chassis and the body, as all factory electrics run earth return leads back to the body, when accessarys are fitted , ie spot lights with on earth return the only place they find an earth is through the fuel tank wiring. this plays havic with the sub tank computer, this is over come with a earth lead between the body and the chassis, I use to fit a lead under the battrey mount doun to the chassis as there is taped holes in this area, and its out of the way, cheers, Phill

Phil,
I have put earth leads on it as i originally had dramas with my fuel gauge dropping when on high beam but since i fixed the earth problem it has been good. This fault just come out of the blue last week. And to top it all off our local Nissan dealer has a real bad reputation for dodging responsibility. Just can't win can you??? Unless it is bog standard at this dealer they will wipe you every time.............Pete! :armsup:

as the turbo timer is wired back to the ignition, this can also cause trouble as it has power in one supply and not another, as the sub tank control unit, uses power from more than one spot, then this can set it to defaut . this is easly cleared by removing the battrey termanal for a minute or so, this resets the control unitand clears the light, there is a wirng joint block under the car, on the chassis lh side . check this out for good connections. there is a diagnoses fault chart that you could use to tell what fault code is recorded, and work from there. i think you turn the ignition on press the subtank swich 6 times with in 10 seconds and it should flash the code, i will look for the paper work i have on it, and post , cheeres for now, Phill

Thanks for that phil. It is apparently bringing up a code 11 whatever that is. I got the s**ts with it and pulled the plug on the pump and hardwired it so i can at least use the tank till i can get around it. I travel some long distances at night sometimes and need the fuel capacity. The flow chart for troubleshooting would be good. I will try disconnecting the battery like you say and see if it clears the code. That sounds like all they did at nissan because i had to reset the stations on the radio when i got it back. I thought that was a bit odd at the time, now i know why!
The turbo timer had been in for a few weeks before i had any trouble so i had discounted that theory but you never know i suppose.
