My cruiser has been pulled of road for some TLC and looking for another daily driver wich will be a zook and have to have a ute, seen as the stockmans are way to dear I`m going to have to chop and lengthen the wheel base from the rear,I was thinking about chopping the chassis behind the hangers, lengthen it and get it up so i can do SOA rear(keep stock hight) and get the tank up for clearance.so would that be legal?

Im pretty sure you are allowed to modify and weld the chassis rearward of the rearmost spring mount, and forward of the foremost spring mount.

wouldnt be legal at all... it would need to be engineered.
do a search for a post by me called CHASSIS EXTENSION, theres heaps in there.

coil the rear then theres no need for the chassis extension

So i understand that as Stockman utes are too dear so you're looking at buying a sierra SWB soft top or hard top then chopping the cab, extending the wheelbase then building a tray?
If so the money that you'll spend on engineering it (will be necessary for those mods) will most likely outweigh the cost of buying a ute in the first place.
If you have your heart set on doing a ute conversion as zook 60 said you may as well do a coil conversion to start with. There is a little more work involved but not much more. It would probably be more "engineer friendly" as you wouldn't be needing to extend the load bearing section of the chassis. You would (if you need tray length) probably need to extend the rear of the chassis to fit a tray of worthwhile size on the back.
There's heaps of Zooks that have been chopped over this year, so theres heaps of info around here. If you do want to go that way make sure that you talk to an engineer before you start the work to see how he wants it done.

Man chassis extentions are common place in the body building industry. Most F350 ambulance have at least a 400mm extention to the wheelbase. Yes it will have to be engineered but if you follow the guidelines and are a competent welder it should be no problem. Most truck body builders would either have an authorised engineer or be able to put you in contact with someone. Plus if you can't do the work speak to the boss at the truck place and one of his guys on the floor would probably do it for you.
