Outer Limits 4x4 Board

its my understanding that you cannot have any lights 100mm or more above ome equiptment, UNLESS they are controlled by a swithch not connected by your high beams,
im not sure if this is correct could someone please help?

I've read some topics that state the maximum height for forward lighting has been removed. It used to be 1.4m high.

I also think any high beam lighting must be controlled by a high beam switch, and not be able to be turned on separate to the vehicle's normal high beams.

Google ..lights etc for Vic Roads standards... there has been a lot of posts on this.

Last time i checked in NSW the law was your LOW BEAMS had to be below 1400mm from the ground with the vehicle unloaded. Im not sure if this opens a loophole or not for spotties operated by high beams above the roof because ive never tested that theory and i think they make a 4b look extremly redneck. Not only that, they will shine on your bonnet and blind you, thus defeating the purpose of having them in the first place.

yeh if not mounted correctly they can blind the driver... Too far forward and they will shine on your bonnet.. too far back and they fill up your side view mirrors..

Yet if installed correctly, they give an unsurpassed light throw onto the road..

All i know is they MUST be switched with your high beams.
And also you are not allowed more than 3 pairs of high beam lights (including factory high beams).
So a pair of spotties on the bullbar and 4 lights on the roof is illegal

ah but if you have then unplugged and covered they are legal....

so just take the covers off and plug em in when u need em.

So if they are unplugged they are probably classed as search lights or similar?... And not as High beam lights..

have you ever tried lights on your roof, i have 4 of them and they are so much better than two on the front bar. they dont blind me off the bonnet or the rear view mirrors. Im also thinking about turning the two outer lights a bit more towards the side to light up a wider areaso i can see roos earlier........only downside i see is i cant get into shopping centre carparks with them on there, but thats just a good excuse to not have to go shopping........

any comps at night ... it could mean you can go faster cause u can see more ... seeing as being able to see is kinda a vital part in any sport

Yes, only coz of the lights.

Ive got lights on the roof of my 80 and i have them switched with high beam but also have a switch so that i can turn them off if not wanted...

They are awesome.. they crap all over the bullbar mounted lights...

I have them moounted just in front of the pillar and they dont light up my bonnet or my mirrors...

Well, all the rally cars ive ever worked on have their spotties mounted across the front and they would be barely 600mm from the ground. They seem to work fine at speeds over 200ks on nights that are darker than Ernie Dingo's ass.

So your either all blind, bad drivers or just like cranky said, rednecks.

Rocklights are the gun option for night 4bing, lighting up the wheels and the immediate terrain ahead, not 200m up the track.

Hi Gribble, I think you will find that rally vehicle don’t have their lights on the roof because the size and weight of the lights being on the roof would cost them time because it would affect their handling.

Roof mounted lights would dramatically alter the vehicles centre of gravity and on light weight vehicles like them, it could be devastating, plus at high speed, roof lights would affect the vehicles aerodynamics

As for 4x4s, the weight is not a problem but roof mounted lights are a definite safety improvement.

Different situation.

Rally drivers are concerned about high speed aerodynamics, so they don't want the extra drag from lights on the roof.
Rally drivers have a navigator sitting next to them, telling them what the road does up ahead - shadows in dips aren't as much of an issue, because the navigator has already told the driver what's there.

It's simple sight-lines. If your lights are below your line of sight you'll see shadows in the dips. If your lights are above your line of sight, they'll shine deeper into dips than you can see - everything you can see is lit up.

I haven't looked at the links, but my understanding is that any lights above 1200mm are illegal for on-road use. Keep covers on them while you're on-road and it's harder for Mr Plod to claim you're using them illegally.

theres no room on a bullbar for 6 spotlights, the two i have already affect the airflow to the radiator. this plus the fact that it would be illegal is a good reason, by having them on the roof they are work lights and legal to have.......give up dude, they are redneck, but not gay. and lets not forget bogged was on his side earlir too

i forgot i was in the patrol this arvo and drove straight into the shopping centre......... im higher than 2.2m no damage, but the car behind me looked a bit worried

Honestly lights on the roof arent going to slow you down enough to effect stage times and rally cars rarely see above 200km/h maybe WRC but definitely not ARC. Also most rallies in Australia are not pacenoted majority are just diagrams telling you what the stage might look like. Lights on the roof i dont think are necessary. They dont call them wanker bars for nothing.

jdubya, you have obviously never been in a vehicle fitted with roof lights or you would not have posted the previous unenlightened statement.

First off, at speeds of only 100 kph, driving lights on the roof would have a major effect on a rally car’s power and handling.

I have them on a 2 1/2 tonne 4x4 and the effect is noticeable, both on power and fuel consumption at anything over 100 kph.

Again, I reiterate on the above and say you have not even been in a 4x4 with roof light during a night drive, because if you had you would know of the incredible safety advantage roof lights give you over bull bar mounted lights.

As posted by a number of people above, roof light literally let you see over crests and into dips way before bull bar lights can even give you an idea the a dip is in front of you.

Call them wanker lights if you want but until you have experienced them you will have obsoletely no idea of their advantage.

more light is more light! no argument, for your avg night run 2 spotties on the bar work fine... but if your doing alota country K's at night, those extra couple of lights on the roof have saved me from hitting several kangaroo's by being able to light up a little more than whats in front of me.

Every large tractor and heavy machinery u see have their lights mounted 75cm from ground rally style... NOT! Often their low mount lights would be higher than the roof of a fourby.

Roof lights are used by:

Genuine people:
1. Shooters
2. Country long distance drivers
3. Offroad tourers
4. Competitors
- these guys would either fold them down, put covers on them, take the light bar off when they are not using them

Wankers:
1. Rarely go offroad and dont need them anyway
2. Just another accessory to match the rod holders, chrome wheels, colour-coded wiper blades, 50ft antenna, truck side lights, scratch-free shopping trolley, private school stickers, etc, etc.....
