g'day people i have got some birthday and chrissy money to spend and was planning to go and buy a cb i like the sound of the uniden gps105 has any one had exprience with this model? what brand, model would you recomend?

If you want to support Australian companys then buy a GME brand,
I thought Prestige Communications was Oz ran, but I'm always wrong.
Most won't recommend the GPS/CB, The Gps is basic and you'd only find you'd want a better unit once you get the taste for Gps. The GME Radio transmit is much more Stable and shouldn't require a service as often as the Uniden.

get urself a gme radio they are a good solid unit.

No experience with the TX4000 but I've had a TX4200 and now have a TX4400. Both excellent units that I can't fault.

ive currently got a uniden and wouldn't buy another one, gme far supperior in terms of sound quality and range

The TX4000 is now 10+ years old. It has been replaced with the TX4400.

The TX4400 has been around for a few years now, it is very popular because of the front mounted speaker, easy to read display, sel call etc and that it is a standard din size that will fit in most dashes that have the extra spot to mount a radio or cb.

The TX4400 is a good unit and i have seen them used everywhere and have not heard any bad fedback about them. If you are worried about size then you could go a TX3200 or remote head TX3400.

hey sorry just realised i got my model numbers wrong im looking at the tx4400, size isnt really a problem to me there plenty of room in the cruiser,thanks for the replies so far keep em coming

If you want to spend the extra get an Icom 400 Pro, nifty little radio, huge capacity for channels and loaded with features. Very solid too.

I second the Icom 400 Pro. They can easily me modded/programmed to make them even better.

hey according to prestige communications the tx4200 is only just cheaper
http://www.prestigecom.net.au/default.a ... openmenu=1 so how does the icom unit stack against the gme one? from what i see icom never heard of before,more user programable channels, and can be turned up to 25w. gme hear of and havent heard bad from,20 programable chanels, australian made. i dont know

4200 is old model. still good one as mine gets abused heaps. mostly in the pines and mud.

Icom is generally a commercial radio, although can be programmed for comsumer use. anything over 25w is illegal by the spectrum stadards, u can get away with more for a mobile rig but depends on if they will program it that way. i have heard that the 4400 can also handle more power out of it and also can have police recieve channels programmed into it.

yeah the icom one can program 80 chanels so i can have all the cop chanels and more

but still dont know is $400 about the right price for them do you know??

Here on the farm my car utilise the new ICOM IC 400 pro. The advantages of this set is that you can get it programmed to be run as a RT as well transmitting at 25W. ( I have this unit set to the frequency that my Tait RT'(s) run )
The advantage of this for us is that the conventional 5W transmit power for the UHF isnt enough juice to reach the house if its 5km away for instance. As the RT i can be 80 kms away and can still transmit and recieve.

Good little unit

but price is a little bit to high but for an Rt type set it's about right

What i have seen is that prestige in malaga seem to be the best in prices lately. there is another place down canningvale area also. overlander or something like it.

uniden is a well regarded brand and there are lots more. i think the radio you choose must meet your needs size,price etc. much more critical is your aerial setup, this will make more of a difference to you when you will need it most, probably stuck in the miidle of who knows where.

thanx the the relpys, the people who have paid out the dosh for a tx4400 or an icom, are you happy with them or would you preffferd to to a more simple unit, is the icom still practical for a recreational4x4 because i dont live on no farm, if im gonna go for one of thses two im gonna need a little more spending money,

As Julian_4x4 said, the Icom is a 25W commercial rig, programmed for CB use in Aus. As such they are likely to be better designed than one intended just as a CB radio.

I had a 400 pro and now have a F621. They are great radios.

The extra power is even more of an advantage in hilly forests, as these reduce the signal strength.

Others will recieve your stronger signal, but you may not hear their replies (unless they also have more than 5W Tx power).

Friday i ordered my Icom IC 400Pro with cable, and it arrived on
tuesday. I promptly installed it and hooked it up to my laptop
running Win2000 and it worked straight away! So far it's been very
impressive. After many years of owning Uniden and GME radios i'm
convinced i'm not going back.

My initail concern was that the tiny front speaker was going to
perform poorly and i would need an external speaker. How wrong i
was - the speaker works well.

Secondly, i am amazed by the quality of received signals. When
receiving a signal in the same location and same antenna as my old
uniden 013, icom receives STRONGLY where the uniden was breaking in
and out.

Thirdly, the build quality is superb. I am sure i'll get many
DECADES of use from this radio.

radios whose service was excellent!)

I purchased the 105 on ebay for $355.00 including CB antennae. It is my first UHF CB radio and I don't require a very powerful radio. What I liked was that it has speed alert, Speedometer, black spot intersection alert, red light camera alert and you can programme the locations of the speed cameras. Not that I speed. It has basic GPS navigation where you can select any town inOZ and it will guide you to there.

The antennae that came with it is a fairly short stainless steel.

Problems. I think the display is not that easy to read in direct light...and I think my LCD is playing up and I will return it for a check up.
