if the wire is shorting out on other body parts then it is the power feed.
It should be connected to a post and held on by a nut.

Thats a familiar story, mine burst into flames but thankfully I was at a car wash at the time..... I spoke to another proud paj owner from this site who had the same problem, aparently its fairly common. Because the starter is front facing and not protected by anything it cops the full grunt of all the lovely mud dust and water we seem to play in, therefore covering and filling it with s#'*.. It wouldnt hurt to take it off and blow it out every now and then.
Has anyone found a way to protect the starter? Ill be keen to save myself another starter rebuild!!!!

well its been like 3 weeks and my brand new starter motor is playing up again after a trip to the otways forest. while i was away there every now and then it just wouldnt start (car is also auto so no roll start) so the best i could do was spray some wd40 and clean up the end as best as i could with a rag on a screwdriver, anyway that sorta helped while i was there but it happened about 10 times in 3 days where it wouldnt start, well that was last week and i went to start my car before and no starty so i cleaned it a bit the then tried and it started but the starter motor was stuck on so i had to disconnect the battery. and then once again no starty
does anyone know what it would be? it is a brand new starter only 3 weeks old and i no mud aint good for em but i only went through probably 3 bog holes, anyway is there a way to fix it and stop it happening everytime i go for a bash?
thanks in advance

The simplest and easiest way not to f*ck your starter motor is to stop driving bog holes. (3 bogs or 30, it does not take much to stuff em). Stay on the rocks and hills where you bloody should be

The starter motors are pretty well sealed
Mud should not get in but muddy water will and you cant stop this
Same goes for alternators (just replaced my after a bog hole day) but they also let mud in through the ventalation slots
Makeing up a can like thingo (use that word too much) to cover these componets will help to delfect water.
Satrters have a short duty cycle so heat should not be a problem but you will need to ensure the alternator has air still flowing accros it
The rubber flaps inside the tyre well that fill the between the body and chassis stop alot of crap coming in. These also help to create an air bubble under the hood when fording.
If you have done a body lift these now have a gap of usally 2" right at the same height as the starter motor
I made my own after the body lift by using the old as templates and adding 2" to the bottom
Also check the cluch in your fan. Don't know how, but check it
The idea is that when you hit water the clutch stops the fan spinning and churning up mud and water everywhere in the engine bay. Fan shoulds help too
Other that that I make sure I spray both starter and alt with WD40 when ever i spay the dizzy and leads (Help crud fall of and makes it easier to wash at the end of the day)
While i am thinking of it how much easier is the starter to do after a body lift. Over the front wheel lift the rubber flap and there it is

i too just got ANOTHER starter (number four now) did exactly what UAV described when i went to avon river the other day.
turn the key and a click ... just keep doing it and eventually fires .....
the starter has a little minnie breather - im wondering if you can extend this upwards and then silicone the whole darn thing !
thats my project next week ........ after this saturday

A key factor here is you keep cranking until fire
Starters work really hard, they have to turn the engine under compression
To do so draw extremely high currents
not sure on exact numbers but you starter pulls around 300 amps
If you keep cranking it, 300amps through your battery cable is pretty soon like a couple of amps through your toaster element
Heat is one of the properties always present with electricity
Give it a go for a little bit. Maybe two or three times for say 15 sec each
If it does not start wait for five minutes. Give every thing especially the battery cable (weakest link) and chance to cool a little and the battery time to refresh.
Problem is more likely water in the ignition
The click thing is the solinoid dropping in and out.
This is normal you just dont normally hear as the engine usually goes whurrrr whurrr vroom (sorry had too do that).
Probally worth checking your battery. The solinoid will drop in as low 6v but you need all 12v to turn the motor
Supercheap has fire extiguishers(sp?) for $20, at that price its worth getting two

no no .... i dont hold the ignition on !
when you turn the key - you here the solinoid click and no engine firing ... so i then release the key .... and try again ..... keep doing the same turn and release until it fires
and eventually take it out and clean out the solinoid - let it dry out and its right to go again for a while ......... so have two constantly on the go
only takes 15 minutes (including ciggy and beer) to change

well i got a new starter put in today, the 1 that was put in 3 weeks ago i got done by racv starters and alternators and it also came with a 2yr warranty, so it didnt cost me anything today
when the bloke pulled off the old one i had a look inside and it was filled with thick dust and both the holes were filled with gunk. anyway car is working now, i just need to make up a breather for it.

yep i too have this with my new starter motor
i've actually found the wiring to of been stripped and earthing out hence why i just went out and bought some tar tap,im covering all the exposed starter motor wires so they wont melt and earth out again.
bog holes etc aint healthy for pajero's they get mud grass etc caught up between the starter and they can catch fire quickly
i keep checking mine for grass etc and mud and clear it every time if i do go through bog holes.
starters are a problem but what can you do?
