thinking about buying a 45 series ute off of a mate of dads, and turning it into something like that red beast in the members section(longterm plan here), i was just wondering what would be cheaper/ better performance wise to fit, a 350 chev petrol like the that one, or a v8 desiel(brands?). ive also notice alot of blokes who fit v8s also put in autos, is this just to make driving eaiser or is there some other reason?

I'm putting chev 350 into my truck, and after much research decided to put landcruiser auto behind it.
T700 auto (bolt straight up to Chev) is rumoured not to be strong enough. A beefed up version from Wholsale automatics is worth $3750 b4 any adaptors are bought. I notice they recommend the 4L80E (truck auto) for most big diesel swaps, but don't know how much $$$ these are.
The cruiser auto is very strong but can be hard finding one for less than $2g.
I'm pretty sure the Cruiser manuals are tough, I'd personally go that way if you want to keep ur costs down.

petrol would be better long term $$ wise as you could put it on gas
But then a Diesel V8 on diesel/gas would have an awesome amount of power

The v8 diesels are very heavy. Expensive to purchase. There are a lot of V8's with manuels behind them.

Diesel is a lot more economical than petrol. Just got back from Melbourne and got 15.2lt to 100km sitting on 105km. On the way back I did a front bearing and limped home from 60km south of Yass at 65kmh. This returned 13.03lt to 100Km (68.05lt used for 525Km).

Not bad figures for a GM 6.5lt V8 Diesel infront of a Toyota auto :-)

I get 15lts to the 100kms from my 1UZ (toyota V8) and thats sitting on 110 to 120 running 33`s and 4.88 diff gears and driving threw Sydney. Even up the putty road and back again it gets 15lts to 100.

So I don`t think ya V8 desiel is that good, I have a shit load more power, cheaper to buy the motor to start with, cheaper to rebuild if that ever needs doing and a shit load lighter

Hmmm, but on what planet is that good freeway economy? On a dollars per km basis, a V8 on petrol would match that and a V8 on gas would slaughter it. Meanwhile on either fuel the 350 chev would be making more power and torque for you.

I can see the diesel option making sense if you have a lot of money to burn, and there are some advantages to a diesel, but if you're after bang for bucks it doesn't make sense to me as a swap-in when you consider the cost of the motor itself.

damn, i want to put a 1uz in the zook, has better fuel economy.

I'ld look at ur budget first and then decide where u want to drive and what. Gas is good but harder to get if u want to do desert crossings. Go the 1uz or 2uz for performance bolt ons.

The Raider I had was pushing 18lt to 21Lt on a good day and that was from a 2.6lt petrol.

Put a heavy trailer behind your 1UZ and then see if your getting 15l/100, the desiel won't even know its there. Doesn't the 1UZ make its power up high in the rev range, therefore you'd have to rev it pretty hard to get out of sticky situations.

I get around 20l/100km when towing the zook out to LCMP, which it does fine, if it wasn't for the soft springs in the runner you'd hardly know its there.

this sound like very good economy but what is the weight diffrence of your hilux vs a 60 series with v8 diesel? less weight is free horsepower and more than likly better fuel economy?

2250kgs.
If you start sinking the boot in when taing off from lights etc, by this I mean 5500 - 6000rpm gear changes those fuel figures go write out the window

So, who doesn`t love the sound a singing V8 :D Oh and read twisty`s post about towing. Plus if I wanted to tow a heavy trailer I wouldn`t be using a shit box hilux for that anyway  Thats why I have the 80 series ;)

I like the big v8 diesels and have always being temted, but I have heard bad stories about the ones in the hummers not lasting, but then that could just be the yankees driving them and treating them like shite.

at the end of the day the petty will be cheaper to get in, and if you are not towing will not be much different to the diesel econamy wise, if you are towing the diesel will kick arse, but bearing mind the torque of the diesel will require a pretty good box.

petty wise the t700 will do but may break, the t400 is stronger but crude dont know why the toyo box they put behind the lexus v8s would not be strong enough. the tourqe convertors cause trouble on the 4500s when they are turboed so stear away from those.

other than that talk to the guys that have done it b4

i put the chev desiel in mine because i had the t700 in there behind my 308 stroker (bloody thirsty thing to run) so that was the easiest option for me and i always wanted one. The t700 will hold up but in standard trim it won't, they put the same box in the chev pickups as they do the VN commodore, thats why they have trouble with them, to much weight. Got to beef it up with the right aftermarket gear!

no engine swap is cheap unless you do it yourself.

Thats right, its a pain in the A but if you've got the time, paitience, and skills its all worth it. My motors in and running and i can drive it but i've got heaps of work to go to get it right. It all depends on how deep your pockets are, mine aren't deep enough, plus i want to do it myself

I know of a jag here in sydney with a Nice (but std) 4 bolt 350, t400 and on straight LPG. You could buy it, strip it and then sell the body for good $$ as its engineered for nsw/vic/act.

;) ;)

Cheers
