vcoming home on f3 (newcastle to sydney) got the mav up to 170 before the threat of double demerits and fines etc got the better of me. funny thing is i think i had a fair bit left in the her too.. 170 was only at 2300 rpm in overdrive so had about 2000 rpm left in od to use in theory..4.3 geared, 33inch mtr's auto tb42 on straight gas with all the goodies

Somehow don`t think you would have pulled the rest of the rev range in o/d though.

Must be hell of a tall overdrive, my stock manual TB42 with 34" tyres and 4.1's is doing 2500rpm at 100kph in 5th, and ran outa puff around 150kph, and way the guage was dropping, I wasn't sure I'd have enough fuel to slow down.
Then again, I rev mine to 6500rpm, so mines still faster than yours :D

thats why i say in thoery guys.. i do realise i was at basically my limit..maybe another 5 or 10 k's max. but i have always been amazed at how easy it gets to that speed ever since i done the crane HEI and plugs leads extractors exhaust. top end power has been sweet with not any noticable bottom end losses. goes pretty well for a boat anchor tb42..guys off here that have been on board with me will vouch on the way it gets up and goes.

what did u guys think i was having a yank at ya chains with i have the fastest mav story?

Maybe but something doesn't gell right with the rpm figures, what ratio is the OD? 2300rpm at 170kph, what's it do at 100kph?

Mine was b4 the Crane HEI system, haven't tried it since, but I can still spin the tyres with ease & chirp the tyres changing to second.

went for another blast tonight this time out to penrith and back on m4... at 100ks in od it sits at about 1650 - 1700rpm and has shit all pick up power.. basically need to switch outta od to accelerate, but will cruise ok.

in 3rd (drive) at a 100 was about 2600rpm. in drive it will keep accelerating to about 160-165 with rpm up to 4800 ( will keep reving but i do have some mercy for the motor). switch in od and the revs plummet but car still pulls. same as last time.. 170ish ks at 2300ish revs. does seem to hit the wall around this speed though, but im sure if i could keep it buried id get 190-200..

i dunno bout rpm accuracy, but i do have a gps to verify speed accuracy.

im happy. 700ish ks on about 75 bucks on straight lpg and plenty of power too.

I have a Mav with 3.9 gears.

I am running 275/75/16 tyres . (No idea what size in inches this tyre equate to?)

100kph in 5th gear and I am pulling 2200

100kph in 4th and I am pulling 2600rpm. My speed is checked against the GPS and it is only 1kph difference.

For me to pull 170kph in 5th I would be doing 3740 rpm.

I think your tyres are probably taller, but my diff is also taller. It doesn't matter how good your engine is for this excercise I just think something is not accurate.

I think your auto has a hell of a high O/D ;)

The auto's run a .694% O/D 4th and the manual run .836% O/D 5th

That means the auto is 16% more higher geared than the manual.

By your calculations at 100kph you are pulling about 1700rpm which is about 58 kph per 1000 revs.

At 170kph you are pulling 2300rpm which is 74kph per 1000 revs.

This should be relative and constant in O/D lockup. It should not vary.

If both are in lockup 4th OD then based on the earlier measure you should be pulling 133kph @ 2300rpm not 170kph.

If the latter is correct then you should be pulling 124kph@1700 rpm not 100kph. What do you reckon?

L28 MK

Post by Sterlo »

Just a thought, ive had me old patrol L28 SWB upto 200, (had old man in mums commodore behind me) Its got 4 stock diffs, was a 4 speed but have fitted a sd33 non-turbo 5 speed up to it. Can pull 180km/h in 4th @ bout 6000RPM, then into 5th and it still climbs. Even has stock nikki carby on it, only a 3" snorkel and electronic dizzy. GO figure... but only 140000km on the clock.

my SWB tb42 auto. Does 133km/h in low range on the limiter. So I would assume it will do double that in Hi-Range.
This was measured on the a GPS, got no idea what the tacho was reading. But car has 255/85R16 (33's) and 3.9 diff gears.
Oh and this was tested on private propterty. And only just had enought realestate to pull up.
