I'm in the process of going fron 265/75/16 A/T's to 285/75/16 M/T's and was wondering if any knows whether the 33 inch M/T will fit underneath in the factory spare wheel carrier. I've got a towbar which seems to reduce the space and it doesn't look as if there is much room with the 31 inch, so I though I'd ask to see if anyone has managed it.

Really? That's good to know. It the wheel carrier adjustable or something because my 31 inch AT is butted up against the towbar at the back?

Nope. wheel carrier is not adjustable. Mate, I got a 33 under mine. Any bigger and it'll hit the panhard.

Have you got a towbar on yours?

I had a tow bar. I now have a Coight Engineering custom rear bar. However, with the factory tow bar, you shouldn't have any probs.

I had been thinking of doing similar on my 4Runner for on road duties. I was a bit worried about the chain that holds the tyre on though, as my 33's on rims weigh as much as 40kg, compared to the old 205R16 steely...
Is it the little chain gizmo on an 80 also?

It looks like it. The wheels is a standard Landcrusier steel GXL rim and the spare will be a BFG 285/75/16 M/T that still has about 60% tread. I know that putting it underneath is not ideal and in the long term I'll probably get a rear wheel carrier but the tyres are coming in about two weeks so I need to be able to carry the spare in the mean time. When I'm heading out offroad, I might sling it in the back. Someone suggested a 750 x 16 on a split rim as the spare. Might have to look at that option as well.

7.50R16 are a similar overall diameter to the 265/75R16 which is pretty close to 32". 285/75R16 are a 33" OD (roughly) so a 7.50R16 probably isn't the best option. It will get you out of trouble. Try and source a 255/85R16. These are a narrow 33".
I have a couple of second hand ones that I hang onto for just this reason.
Cheers,
Ryano

Ryano, that sounds like a very good option. I did a bit of fiddling with a tyre calculator today and you are spot on, the 255/85/16 is almost identical to the 285/75/16 in size so it might be a good option to get one of them and swap the spares over when out offroading. I imagine that would tuck under pretty well.
