auto to manual conversion TD42

I've just got back from a trip up the coast, my first biggish run in the Safari.

I did consider myself an auto convert, having driven manuals all my life I was amazed but I really liked the auto.

But it's started to shit me on this trip, there is something a bit wrong with it I think and I"ve been considering a re-build. But on this trip I did get pretty sick of it changing gear at all the wrong times especially on the highway.

So now I"m thinking of converting the truck to manual instead of paying $$$ to re-build the auto.

Can anybody tell me if this is a straight forward swap or will I encounter problems? Anybody care to estimate the cost?

Thanks,

Straight forward swap. mounts and driveshafts all swop/line up.
you need the pedal assembly and brake pedal. If you can't get a clutch booster { they can be in short supply }, make an adaptor plate and bolt the clutch master straight to the firewall. Flywheel and flexiplate bolts are the same. Transfercase interchanges between auto and manual but you need the manual extension houing.
If you do run the booster you need the vaccum tank and piping with oneway valving.

Thanks J Top,

I talked to my mechanic today and he's gonna work out an approx cost for me, so I'll see how much that is, but it's looking likely I'll go for the conversion.

Cheers,

Martin

rebuild the auto, once rebuilt you wont look back. Better off and on road.

YMMV

Thanks for replies guys, I'm waiting for my mechanic to give me a quote for the conversion.

As for re-building the auto, well the only people who are giving me sensible answers on that are wholesale automatics, everybody else doesn't want to (or doesn't) know. Problem is Wholesale autos are in Melbourne, I'm in Sydney.

I'm still researching though.

$3300 fitted including new clutch kit, box transfer, pedals etc.
Thats paying about $1800 for all the g/box parts and then the clutch kit on top of that.

lookin at the cost of rebuilding V manual conversion plus hassles (there are always hassles) plus all the work, it would be worth shipping to melb, shouldnt me much more than $100 on a pallet.

Or road trip to Melb, how long would it take Wholesale to rebuild yours? bound to be someone who could put ya up.
