How do you check speedo transducers.

Not sure if this is the place for this questions, feel free to move it if it isn't.
As the title say's. How do you check the speedo transducer that screws on the transfer case?
I have pulled the transducer off and attached a drill onto it and the speedo still don't work so I know the problem isn't in the t/c.
What I've done so far is check all fuses and fuse links, visualy check most of the wiring up to the back of the speedo, the bit's I didn't check seemed to be straight wiring in the loom, pulled the dash out and check visually for broken solder etc on the instrument cluster circuit board. So far all seems good.
I sometimes get some movement out of the speedo and it did start working again for no apparent reason for a couple of days. The only thing I haven't checked is the transducer and I don't want to spend a fortune on a new one if it ain't broke. And I'm getting tired of using the GPS for checking my speed.
All ideas will be considered.
Thanks
Chucky
