Replacing cv´s on 80lc... could this be a short cut?

I have always changed cv´s in the traditional way (stripping the whole steering knuckle apart, half day jobbie each side)...
The question... Has anybody ever changed or at least tried to change a cv by just removing the top steering knuckle kingpins and bottom steering knuckle arms and pulling the whole assembly out, exposing the cv and axle??? (provided the cv circlip, etc have been removed)

heaps do it. much quicker, but bloody heavy. can do it in under 30 mins a side that way

yup first time i did a cv i was like "how do i get in there". did the kingpins and pulled the cv
easy

heavy, and at a severe risk of major damage to the inner seal while you're fiddling around getting it back together. with air tools I can do a CV the "traditional" way in around 15 minutes, around 20 if the inner seal needs replacing. Have done it the "other" way and found it takes as long or longer - maybe because I'm soft and can't hold it up. you need to pull off the 8 little bolts that retain the wiper seal at the back, and if that area is at all crusty then the clean-up required can take an extra half hour - and those little buggers can be a PITA to put back.

agree, Rob and I were doing cvs at 15 a side, two of us could do the both in 20 sharing tools. Its really about having the right tools IMO
