Good engine builder in eastern suburbs - VIC/engine exchange

I'm looking for an engine reconditioner for a toyots 2H diesel.

I've been quoted $5500 from Orger engines, unfuelled. He suggested injector/pump rebuild would likely cost ~$2500, which i though sounded a bit pricey?
HM Gem engines quoted $5750 for a bare long motor. (i didn't think to ask, but i presume this ISN'T exchange). I've heard bad things about HM GEM - anyone care to comment?
Couldn't find much on the net apart from Bernie Parts who exchanges a fuelled long motor for $5730. I think these are an imported reco motor.

Who else should i consider? Both for a reconditioner or exchange motor?
I fear an exchange motor could prove to be low on quality - are my fears justified.

Any help appreciated.
-Stu :)

i got a hm gem engine, change over on my 22r cost 1200 so i wasnt that annoyed but they couldnt build that properly so i would not trust them with a diesel. they are just a budget rebuild.
what about a 1hz? get a low ks from a wreckers... maybe?

Get someone who builds these motors, ie. a desiel specialist. I got a engine builder to build my chev desiel, and they stuffed it. Even if it costs a bit more, atleast its done right!

fuck good time for a v8 or ford 6 conversion and lpg. typical over priced toyota engine rebuild prices steer clear of gem for sure. thay have the best machines for engine reco but nothing is ever cleaned propely ect typical mass produced crap. have put plenty in for customers over the years and sent plenty back with stuff like allen key style head bolts and stuff half full of old crap from the last engine thay were in ect

This guy takes pride in his work  and even though mine is not a diesel he can build one hell of a torquey motor. Worth a call and a chat though quality is not always cheap.

In conjunction with my mechanic Chris
New Car Service Center ( he does old cars too )
1 Richard Street
Mitcham

I have no problems at all recomending both very highly. Chris has over seen most of the modifications and now knows FJ40's Inside out

Thanks all for the reply's! I didn't think $5500 was a bad price, just the $2500 estimate for the pump/injectors.
I'll give some of these places a call.

How bad are the import reco's? Just as bad as HM Gem's? I'll definately steer clear of HM given they're only $250 short of Orger's price.

-Stu :)

EDIT: I calles Bernie parts branch in Cambellfield, who trade as SMS Diesel Spares. They claim the engines are manufactured in sydney. I've been given some fairly attractive quotes by these guys - has anyone had any experience with these engines?

for your injector pump and injectors check out hiflo diesel in springvale, they only do diesel injection. they sell to a lot of diesel mechanics around the traps and through don kyatt in moorabin.

Stay away from HM at all costs. I got a change over Holden v8 to fit to a mates car and couldn't turn the thig over with a 3' breaker bar with the plugs out!! Try Crankshaft Rebuilders in balckburn 98940024 they don't usually assemble but could point you in the right direction.

Thanks again for the replie's everyone, i'll give hiflo a call on monday.

Is there still noone out there who's had experience with one of these SMS Diesel exchange motors?
