Guys got a strange problem
After a big day at Appin over new years I got home and could not select reverse
The gear stick is fouling with the 4wd selector stick
If i put it in 4wd can get rev straight away
Just cant get it past the little stick in 2wd
Any ideas?
EDIT 10-01-06
Its just got worse
The gear lever is sloppy everywhere.
Even when in gear you can move it like its in neutral
When selecting reverse the stick seems to 'fall out'
Its like all the gates are twice as wide as they should be and what ever holds the stick in is stuffed
Anyone got any ideas, please
Cheers

hey mate i have kinda the same problem i can select reverse when i am in 2wd but when i put it in 4wd i cant, the reason why was becasue the bash plate that covers my trasmission was bashed up and was putting pressure on the gear box not allowing me to select reverse in 4wd so i pulled it off and bashed it into place and it works perfectly now thats all i can think of

It sounds like you have "dropped" the pin out of the selector shaft between the gearbox and the transfer case. The initial lack of reverse selection would have been the pin fouling the 4wd/2wd selector shaft and now that it has either snapped or dropped into the box the shaft will rotate when you go to change gears.
Maybe drop the oil in the tranfer case and see if the pin has made its way to the bottom of the pan.
or
remove the gear levers from inside the car and use a large socket extension to move the selector shaft through the gears - you will see where the shaft comes through the gearbox into the transfer case and the hole in the shafts where they join in the transfer. There should be a small cotter pin holding the two together.

Fixed........well sort of
Finaly got time to pull it apart (couldn't drive no more)
The problem started with the plastic cup with attaches to ball at the end of the gear stick wore away
Inturn this made the cup bit that pokes out which hold the gearstick in
break
My older one was basically a pin which poked through the metal retainer cup metal on metal
So I went to the trusty wreckers and for $50 got one out of a later model Pajero complete with good rubber boots which has this part replaced with nylon for less wear and better fit.
Mitsusishi wanted $41 for the metal retainer cup bit only
But when fitting it the little plastic bit on the end fell off into the gear box....got to get an new one from Mitsubish tomorrow about $4
Other than being sloppy cause no plastic thingo works fine and should last longer

ps Anybody know how much oil my gearbox holds (89 trition) and diffs too

Your gearbox holds 1 plastic bit and a couple of litres of oil.
Sorry couldn't resist it

Thats two plastic bits remember the first wore out and I dropped the second
All fixed now
Got a new plastic thingo but at first still could no get reverse
The bottomplate on the new shifter had flats both ends of the slot where as the old one had a raidus at one end
So I put the old bottom plate with the rest of the 'new' shifter and hey presto reverse
