hi there all

The reason for this post - I am after information form the forum.

I am in the process of replacing my blown up 3b motor from my 1986 BJ 73 MWB with a 13BT, doing the ring around and told these engines are not a staight forward replacement for the 3b.

I am after the truth not the Sales Man pitch from a wrecking yard, obviousley there will be differences with the exhaust (normal aspirated to turbo) is there any other diferences .

I have been told from a wrecking yard in Adelaide they want $5000.00 for an engine. I am despirately after some advice from the forum or someone whom has fitted one prior.

Many thanks

Wayne

They are pretty much a straight bolt up.
And I was told of one today from a wrecker at caloundra Qld for $3000.
The middy comes out with the 13bt. the main difference is that the 3b is indirect injection and the 13bt is direct injection. they have the same head gasket, same exhaust manifold gasket. They are basicaly the same. will bolt straight in apart from what you mentioned with manifolds etc. Most wreckers dont really have a clue. I had one wrecker today who didnt even know the middy came out with the 3b.
Cheers Dave.

Ah, no. Not even nearly a 13bt rotary.
It is a 3.4 litre direct injected turbo diesel.

Wayne,

I'm nealy finished with my 3B to 13 BT conversion. So far everything has gone straight in and there are no major dramas.

Difference I have found in my middy.

1. I don't have a return line to the tank, my return line went straight back to the pump so i connected the return on the 13BT to the pump as well using a T connection into the fuel line. (Work or NOT i will have to wait and see)

2. Shut off mechanism. (I am having problems with that now.) My 3B had an electrical type shut off and the 13BT has a vacumm activated one. I still trying to work it out.

3. Some wiring on the throuttle body side as there seems to be no visible heating element so the wiring that use to be connected to that is all disconnected.

4. Exhaust dump pipe is different so i have to make up and new one.

5. Throttle cable is too short, couldn't find one from a wrecker that was the rite lenght so i'm having one made up. need to be roughly 4inchs longer.

Good thing is, today the engine started and it looks and sounds good. Once the problems are fixed i will post pic and let you know.

Well thats all for now. Hope this helps. Everyone i've talked to said that this is a good upgrade. I hope and KNOW so. Good luck in your search for an engine.

I HAVE BEEN THERE DONE THAT.I HAVE A BJ73 THAT I DO WINCH CHALLANGES. I REPLACED MY 3B WITH A 13BT, THE CLUTCH IS REUSED, BUT MAKE SURE THE PRESURE PLATE IS STRONG, AROUND 800LB CLAMP. THE RETURN FUEL LINE MUST GO TO TANK.NEED IGN POWER TO VACCUM SHUT OFF SOLINOID, USE ONE OF THE PINS IN THE EDEC PLUG. CONNECT GLOW PLUG FEED TO MANIFOLD HEATER OR LIKE ME, DISCONNECT IT ALLTOGETHER. REPLACE THE THROTTLE CABLE WITH THE BJ74 ONE. MOVE THE POWER STEERING RESERVOIR FROM FIRE WALL TO ALLOW ROOM FOR TURBO. I HAVE CRANKED FUEL AND THE BOOST TO 13 LB, ADDED INTERCOOLER FROM SKYLINE,2 1/2 PIPE OUT. 160HP @ FLYWHEEL. LOOKED AT FITTING A 14BT AND A 15BT BECAUSE THE FIELD OF WINCH CHALLENGE CARS HAVE UPPED THE HORSEPOWER ANTE SO I NEED TO KEEP UP. BOTH MOTORS ARE IMPORTS AND NO SPARE PARTS ARE IN STOCK IN AUSTRALIA. TOYOTA CAN ACCESS THE PARTS BUT THERE IS A WAIT TO BRING THEM IN. I FOUND ONE 15B ENGINE IN AUSTRALIA BUT WAS GOING TO COST TOO MUCH TO TURBO SO I HAVE DECIDED TO REBUILT MY 13BT BECAUSE IT IS AN AUSTRALIAN ENGINE AND PARTS ARE CARRIED BY TOYOTA AUSTRALIA. I HAVE A LIST OF MODS FOR THE ENGINE IN MIND WHICH WOULD DOUBLE MY HORSEPOWER THE WORK IS ABOUT TO TAKE PLACE AND HOPEFULLY IT WILL BE READY FOR THE 8 DAY INTERNATIONAL IN SEPTEMBER.

IF YOU NEED ANYMORE INFORMATION DON'T HESISTATE TO PM ME.

JOHN BUTLER.
