brake issues. HJ60

I have a HJ60 (83) and the front brakes are being tempremental.

I will set the scene with a mention of what I did before the problem arose. Basically I pulled the cv'c out to check them and repacked wheel bearings and so on. I did pull the calipers off the hub obviously, but I didnt undo any lines so I didnt feel there was a need to bleed the brakes. Put it all back together thinking it was sweet...it appears I was wrong...either that or just pure coincedence!

I just took it for a drive and it felt as if the front brakes were not working. Just did not want to pull up like it normally does. When I got home I did a lock up test on the front lawn (where else would you do it) and neither of the front tyres locked up...leaving the lawn looking just as it did before the test. Though the disc itself was hot...not burn to touch hot....but hot

So I jacked up the front end and got the wheels spinning as fast as I could (by hand) and got my navigator (wife) to hit the brakes...they appear to work.

So I did another lock up test, and the passenger side locked up! but the drivers didnt.

The pads did move in the calipers when they were out but I am sure they went back into proper position.

So should I of bled the brakes? Would this be probably caused by something not related to pulling hubs off. I have checked brake lines and there are no kinks.

Any tips would be great!

Yeah bleed them and see if that fixes it.

Have you accidentally knocked the pads so they don't sit squarely in the caliper on the drivers side? Could be that the pads are jamming from being on a bit of an angle wrt the caliper/pad locating cutouts. Could also be the piston sitting at an angle in the wheel cyl if you knocked it when/if you replaced the pads.

Even a bit of air in the cct should not adversely affect the brakes operation in th "free air" test that you did.

Smear of brake fliud/grease/oil on the discs/pads when they were reinstalled???

I dare say a few smears of grease may of made their way onto the disc...though I didnt think it would/could effect them that much. I have to go to work tomorrow (after 3 weeks holidays) so the brakes should get a good work out, so see what happens then...

any other ideas fellas??

It might have a damaged or blocked brake line. What will happen here is sometimes is the brake line may appear ok on the outside and bleed ok but there may be a blockage under load. Old brake lines can be damaged fairly easily especially if the caliper is allowwed to hang on the brake line & the big old 60 twin piston front calipers are pretty heavy. What is the brake pedal like? Hard or soft?

If it is soft, clamp both front brake lines & see if it makes a difference. If the pedal becomes hard then remove one, if the pedal becomes soft then you know which brake is playing up. Bleed the brakes before you do any of this though. Also did you leave any twists in the brake lines when you refitted the caliper?

Are your wheel bearings adjusted correctly?

The hubs & brakes will be hot no matter what, if the brakes are dragging they will usually be that hot that there will be smoke.

Any other symptoms?
