Front Shock Towers

Has anyone unbolted and attacked the front shock towers on their GQ??
I have a 100mm spring lift running T.D Coils and Foam cell shocks.
The front shocks were supplied by an outfit here in NZ that know what they are on about, and are correct for the appliction.
Trouble os that if you disconnect on or the shocks you get a heap mpore down travel on that side.
So the shocks are actually to short, and on top of that, when the suspension is compressed to the bump stop, there is still more compression left in the shock.
so whayt i am thinking of doing is heading to the wreckers, grabbing another pair of shock towers and reducing their height so that the shocks are completely compressed when the axle is sitting againstthe bump stops.
That will increase the downwards travel of shock significantly.
Any comments/critisims of this idea??

Sounds like the right idea to me, i wish i had your problem, i need to extende mine!

Sounds like the right plan.
I have a GU and have 4" lift shocks and 3" lift coils so i had the opposite problem. I had to extend the bumpstops to stop the shock topping out, but i get about 75mm more droop out of the suspension with the longer shocks. Plus this way i can put bigger tyres on without them hitting the body as the axle doesn't go up as far. Kind of kills two birds with one stone!
Other option for you could be spacing the shock down or the shock tower, then if you need to take it back to std. at any stage it could still be done.
Anyhow good luck with it.

Yeah, i thought about spacing the shock in from both the top and the bottom with an extra bush.
Not sure if there would be enough on the pin to alow for this though.
Buy unbolting the orgional towers and keeping them, and buying another set from a wrecker and hacking those up, i can still return to standard if need be.
All good input though!!!!!!

Awesome!!
Cheers!
Where abouts did you cut??
Or did you just cut 2.5" from the bottom and then put the right angle bends back in to remount them???

u gave me an idea for mine.but for the sake of it i might just take them to a metal shop and say bend me up some steel like this and come home and weld it up.just make new ones with out doing something obvious of cutting and shutting.if u get pulled over no one will ever know with new made ones.......
NOoooooo !!!!!

A couple of things to think about. You will not be able to compress your bump stops fully testing in the shed. If you lower the shocks tower and on full suspenion compression go past the piont where the shocks bottem out you will destroy them in multiple ways...
I would start by measuring the stroke extended and compressed of what you require. Then go to a reputable shock mob eg Koni and ask them to match a shock. Remember you can only get extended travel out of a longer shock/stroke. It is more common to put 50mm spacers between the chassis and the shock tower and then use the front shocks out of 80 Series Landcruisers. This will give you more travel both ways. The general rule is a 40% up and 60 % down travel.
Good Luck
