tb42s are a very under-rated motor in my oppinion..they are bullit proof and over engineered just like the deisels.. they are also cheep as on the second hand market if u ever need a new one. they respond well to performance mods like hei, extractors/exhaust, better breathing etc..they love lpg...will guzzle fuel though. i have tb42 on lpg and im happy, but i have mates with turbo td42s and id swap them anyday. a diesel will add about 3-5grand to ur purchase price if not more...

Stick with your diesel and turbo it .. better yet buy a GU with the 4.2 turbo diesel as they have better fuel pumps and go better. I'm not a big fan of the TB42 and have owned two before. Both on gas thankfully as they have a good apetite for petrol. One of them cracked the head and I was quoted (I recall) around $900 for an exchange head although in fairness they could have repaired my head for less but there was no guarantee it would work ... something about the alloy being too hard?
Viperguy is right in that you can buy the TB42's pretty cheaply and they can be made to perform a lot better than standard with a little bit of work (or you could go the V8 route) but I'd prefer my TD42 turbo anyday.

Ring around but anything from $3500 upwards depending on if you get a mandrel exhaust etc with it. You might also be up for fitting as well.

i love diesels. except for race engines i struggle to find a real good reason to have a petrol over a diesel. modern diesels have good low torque for overtaking and are more relaxed when cruising. They're also a lot more fuel efficient. Having said all that i own a TB42 and in my experience so far [I've only owned it 2 months] it seems a terrific engine. But because of my intended trip i am going to swap it for a diesel. I'm told too that the outback favours diesel over petrol and so if you intend outback trips you too might be better off with the diesel over petrol for practicality reasons.
Any ideas what good 2nd hand TB42 engines sell for?
