For $15K you can buy a bloody good Rangie for that sort of money, with change to spend on suspension, etc... if you wish.

Early 90's models pre- air suspension are good buys, the 3.9 is a much better engine than the earlier 3.5. Not a road rocket, but a vast improvment plus the 'hot wire' EFI system a much more reliable than the earlier 'flapper' type injection system.

There's many to choose from and take your time. Cheaper ones sound good but you could be buying a bundle of trouble, but there's exceptions to the rule. My brother-in-law bough an 85 Rangi for $1800 and it's a damn good Rangie for that price and year.

The P38A Range Rover (95 onwards) are getting cheaper but while they're a good unit and like chalk and cheese compared to the classics, but the electronics personally scare the shit out of me hence why I'll never buy one.

Good luck with it.

Never buy one Trav? Never is a long time mate. I'm a bit the same though .. they scare the crap out of me too. They are such a brilliant design concept just seem to be let down with niggling (and expensive) flaws but I have been looking at the TD6 Rangie around 2004 model and I'm starting to get tempted I can tell you ... when they come down a bit more in price I might just have to take the plunge. In the meantime, I will keep reading forums like this to see how they hold up and if any problems float to the surface.

you won't find a diesel rangie - at least IMO you won't find one worth buying - the rangies had VM diesels in them vs the 200 TDi, 300 TDi and TD5s of the Discos.

Here is what I think you should buy, get a early 90s 3.9 hotwire EFI with 150,000K on it and then and spend $2k getting an LT230 transfer case put in and you will be well on your way to having the best of it all. The hotwires are very easy to put LPG and stand up to the test of backfires a bit better, having said that however there are a lot of 3.5 EFIs getting around with well over 300,000K on them and they do convert pretty well to LPG so they can't be that bad.

In summary

1. 90s RR 3.9 EFI - hotwire system, with 150,000 - 200,000K spend $2K on new lt230 Tcase to make her go really well off road - more power, goes well on LPG, auto box lasts about 260,000 - 300,000 with about $3k for rebuild

2. post 86 3.5 EFI - flapper already has lt230 tcase not as powerful but very strong engine that can easily do high milage with maintence same autobox and converts pretty well to LPG - bit prone to backfire

How much are the rangies with the BMW diesel selling for Tom (TD6?).

A v8 on gas would probably be cheaper to run with the diesel prices though.
