If you look on thr compliance plate it will tell you. I have a 90 SWB Maverick with a 4.2 diesel and the ratios are 4.11.

there's little regularity..... it was theoried that wide wheel packs (31" tyres) had 4.1 and narrow pov packs had 3.9's.

A quick poll taken earlier showed this was total bs and it seems completely random :D

XLT Mav 4.11

The 2nd last line on the vehicle identification plate behind the winsceen washer reservoir identifies the factory ratio, HG39 for 3.9 or HG41 for 4.11.

Don't forget that a lot of people regear Patrols/Mavs for various reasons (mine has 4.3s now). The reason why I mention this is that wrecker/4WD shop, I was planning to buy the 4.3s from got it wrong because he relied on the identification plate and was taken by suprise when the diffs of the donor vehicle had 4.6 ratios instead of 4.3s.

If you don't know the history of the car, pulling a diff and counting teeth is the only option to be absolutely sure.

Short of this, couldn't you jack up one of the back tyres and rotate it, then mark the tailshaft and watch to see how many turns it does? I guess it might be a bit fiddly but it seems a bit extreme to have to open up a diff just to check the ratio.

Possible?
