BJ42 - Noise (def. not your normal 3B)

There is a strange sound - I'd call it a "wizzzzz" that corresponds with the RPM and can be heard at idle... I have been able to isolate the sound to the passenger side towards the bottom and towards the front... maybe a belt or a pully... I am useless so I'm hoping someone is far more useful than I.

Hope I get the 3B fixed before it becomes 3 bits!!

try taking one belt off at a time to narrow the problems down a bit run eng inbetween taking each belt off

also check it isn't a broken eng mount and the fan blade hitting the radiator shroud

I tried to look at the belts they appeared find - I'm sure it would be best just to replace them (I figure that is a cheep way to keep her on the road) but I have a sneeking feeling I might be in for more than a simple belt swap... fingers crossed that is all I need to worry about.

i noticed a different sound when i tore the 90degree rubber elbow that goes to the intake manifold near the hose clamps.. almost a hissing sound but you could definately tell the pitch was all wrong.. have a look at that as this is the 2nd one I have gone thru (granted this replacement one wasn't the correct size)..

what i meant was take 1 belt off at a time ,run the eng to isolate wether it was a idler pulley or a air con pump with a crook bearing or even a crook alt bearing

I'll try the belt removal thing and see what happens - is there a danger there when some of the accessories aren't running off the belts?

Sim - I've never been off-road in Australia (and I'll throw down the gauntlet and say it CAN'T BE AS GOOD AS IN CANADA!!!) I need my rig back to normal sounding and we can hit the road!

I put a sub in the back - fills out the sound... perhaps a bit tooooo much

it won't hurt for a minute or so but no longer
one of the belts dives the alt as well as the water pump

No results on the belt removal - I've checked it out and it doesn't look too hard.... famous last words... on a positive note - I fixed my lights (they weren't working) and I found out that my spotties that came with the rig are fantastic... just need to wire them up.

Rear diff is going fast - Sim - do you think a berring swap is the best or should I get these guys to rebuild it for me. I expect it will run the full $750 price quoted!

Problem solved! it was the belt tenshioner, a bering was in need of replacment. I had the guy look at everything else and check the belts while there... said she is as good as gold... now... see my other post - "Diesel don't run on Petrol"

Ahh crap. I could have felt usefull for a change. I've just been reading some older threads and found this one. Soon as I read it I thought "it's the belt tensioner". I've replaced mine twice in the last three years (first one was from the wreckers).

I was getting some funny looks and guys saying "Gee, you can really hear your turbo winding out when you came thru that bog", by the way, I dont have a turbo :D .

Cheers........HB

I felt a bit "Mad Max" in the old girl for a week while the "wiizzzzzz" of my blown motor talked to passers by - too bad it doesn't have a big bore blower or a turbo to speak of. I did hear of this idiot box that you can strap onto your clutch to make the "Psshhhhhh" pop off valve noise from a turbo... all for only three hundred bucks! I think for that I might just put the worn berring back in and be super cool.
