Strengthening Chassis Rails (plating)
Posted: Wed Jan 18, 2006 10:35 pm
OK So im in the middle of SAS'ing a Vit ...
Now the chassis rails on the vits let alone and zooks are extremely thin ( obviuosly strong enough for there intial intended purpose ) so when we start modifying to run larger tyres more travel ..and the increase on torque frok lower gears and such they just cant handle it
Well I'm ready to start welding on coil mounts /panhard/ and shock hoops so the question is do I plate this front area of which on the vits near the front of the chassis it seems to have its inbuilt crumple zone 3 vertical compressions on the rail bout 15 wide x entire rail height .
So do i plate all but the these surrounding areas ... the next question is well what thickness plate if I do 3mm or 6mm and I would guess that I should also plug weld the middle sections of the plates if there over a certain size .. I would be worried that if I plated with 3mm and didnt plug weld the plate aswell that it may just flex the same as the chassis rails would've if I hadn't plated them .
And also I have read in a post before the the best appropriate way to weld the plates on as such this figure , so that the ends
<===> ( yes bad figure
)
are tapered (corners) but unfortunatley i wont beable to do this style in all areas due to restrictions i have with factory brkts being in the way .
So if anyone has any info reagrding this due to they have done it before please share .
I did search but found nothing that answered my questions ......and i will be ringing an engineer tomorrow aswell but i wanted your valued
opinions
Cheers
Dan
