Timing on Rover V8

I have just finished fitting the 4.6l short motor to the Rangie. I have kept the WW stromberg carby. I have set the timing at 6degrees BTDC but it still seems to run out of puff at higher revs.
Before I go mucking about with the timing any more I just wanted to see if anyone else is running a 4.6 with Carby and what you have set the timing at.
I am thinking that it may not be a timing problem but that the carby cannot give enough fuel flow at higher revs. I have the same jets as out of a 4.4l.
Any recomendations? At some stage i would like to get it tuned by a professional but being just after Christmas I have no money at the moment.
