Just a quick question, I was climbing up slippery rock road in the watto mts today and my patrol keep stalling on the steep climbs then not wanting to start again. ( mk, swb, l28) any help would be great.
ps this car is in tune and has new fuel filtter.

I'm not sure there's much you can do to stop it from flooding and stalling.. same things happens to my friend's MQ shorty (L28)

..unless you consider an EFI conversion (get gear from R30 Skyline, 280zx etc)

I think its more starving. Not sure tho. would a small reservoir tank help perhaps.

You could try tinkering with the float level if it's starving

Sounds like it, a small reservior tank wont help as the problem will be in the carby.

Check the float level, there is a sight glass with a dot on it, the fuel level when idling should be level with the dot which is about half way.

if its not then PM me & I will scan the instructions on how to adjust the float at work & email them to you tomorrow.

If the level is spot on the maybe some fiddling can be done with raising the level so it wont starve when going up hills.

Standard L28 issue when on steep climbs

Best solution is to increase the float level height slightly...... an even better way is to do this at the steep spot that is giving you the problems...IE: on level ground, increase the float height by 1mm and then do a test drive up the slope, repeat untill ya happy

You said you'd replaced the fuel filter

this car is in tune and has new fuel filtter.

I'm asuming you have replaced the filter in the enginebay only ......... Did you also replace the two mesh filters in the actual fuel pumps???
The fuel pumps are located on the inside of the drivers side chassis rail just before the section of chassis which curves up for the rear wheel. The bottoms of both pumps have a "nut" arrangement which allows tha base of the pumps to be unscrewed, once removed you'll find a fine mesh filter fitted to each pump.
Blowing crud out of these mesh filters may well help but generally I just replace em ( around the $18 each last pair I bought )

Also there will be a steel body filter just before the fuel pumps its the first line of defence in the filtering stage. This filter is around 10inches further up the curve on the chassis rail towards the fuel tank.

So.........
did you just replace the enginebay one or all 4 filters???

My L28 patrol was always a bitch for stalling inb the most annoying spot usually with a wheel about a metre in the air

I have changed all the fuel fillters. Will adjust as you say. Thanks boy.

i had this problem today but not from a steep hill. i was snatching a mate and i had to drive over these dry solid ruts and bounced around heaps.. and kept stalling..

could that be the same reason?

Built-in L28 behaviour. You can pull the manual throttle out a little bit to help. Also, you say you have trouble restarting. On the really steep stuff you wont get it started, but on most things all you need to do is hold the accelerator on the floor as you crank it for a few seconds.

A little secret a carby bloke told me was that they stall because the two pipes that sit over the two barrels of the carby leak fuel into the intake on steep slopes. He reckons you just slip some tube over these two and run them up a bit higher. He said that'll fix it, but I haven't got around to trying it.
